Does the Red One record the /i dataLink metadata to the built-in SD card slot on camera, or do you need to buy the Cooke /i dataLink box?

I believe it is recorded as metadata per frame with the footage.

I was assuming (and this is a total assumption on my part) that the /i metadata would be recorded with the footage to whatever medium you were shooting to - RedDrive, RedRam, CF or otherwise...

Can anyone who actually knows tell me if I'm way off base?!

EDIT: Ah, thanks deadmike - that's two of us who think that's the case then!

Cooke make a /i dataLink box that records to an SD card. This is probably for film and HD cameras. I am curious to know how Red handles the /i dataLink metadata. Linking data to each shot would make sense to me.

the metadata recorded with each frame should be pretty extensive i believe.

I would like to chime in with my hopes to get this whole cooke i/technology and red workflow thing explained IN DETAIL.

who knows this technology and how it will play out with the red?

The lenses contain sensors that give constant feedback to the current position of the focus ring, iris, and zoom. I believe the camera can also tell what lense is attached. This data is combined with other metadata and recorded alongside each stored frame. If the lense is not Cooke /i or LDS then no data is recorded.

The camera also records many other metadata items, such as white balance, gain, framerate etc etc. Stuart once posted a long list. You can also feed your own metadata into the camera through the USB port.

Image data, sound and metadata are multiplexed into 4GB data chunks that are referenced by quicktime files.

No external equipment is required.

Oh and the lense data should also be available in the viewfinder and LCD, making it easier to pull focus.

Enjoy,

Thanks Gibby,

your power to quote (ie. archive, research and capacity to find) is amazing.

Cheers,
