Saw these on DP Review. Sounds cool. Wide fast zoom advantage goes to Nikon.

Also they showed the D3, a full frame sensor digital camera.

Thanks Matt.
Oh this is beautiful-and the beauty is the fact that these are full frame lenses (correct me if I'm wrong) I'd been wishing hard for this. This changes my lens lineup about 70%. Boy am I glad I waited a little to buy new SLR's.

The D3 is the world’s first D-SLR to offer dual CompactFlash card slots for outstanding storage flexibility. A photographer can shoot images to each card one after the other, or simultaneously, as back up. When shooting combined NEF and JPEG files, the NEF image can be written to one card and the JPEG version to the other. Image files can also be selected and copied from one card to the other after shooting.
On a side note, it would be great if RED can implement dual compact flash slots in the future for a similar setup.

Oh yeah!
We wait anxiously for pricing ;)
UPDATE: here is pricing:
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-8742-9085
$1800 for the 14-24 f2.8
$1700 for the 24-70 f2.8
$8800 for the 400mm f2.8
$7800 for the 500mm f4
$9500 for the 600mm f4
So you have a 3-lens pack (new 14-24 and 24-70 plus the old 70-200) giving us a solid 2.8 all the way from 14-200. Not bad!
Of course the new lenses will probably have horribly short focus throws, lack of hard stops when they hit infinity, etc. So Birger mount or a good motor system would probably be needed, sadly.

Wow, after years of claiming that the DX format sensors are big enough, Nikon finally succumbed to pressure from the competition! Looking forward to seeing how the new sensor performs on the D3. Also gotta love that D300, too!
New lenses are nice, too, but the Red sensor is DX-sized, so does it really make that much of a difference for Red users? I mean they already have 12-24mm (albeit f/4), 17-35mm f/2.8, and 28-70mm f/2.8.

Um... what's a "full-frame" lens? All lenses are full-frame aren't they?
J. Bernard Vallon

a non full frame lens will vignette if put on a full frame camera, in the way a s16 prime lens would vignette on 35mm MP film.

Um... what's a "full-frame" lens? All lenses are full-frame aren't they?
Full frame means the lens covers the full 36x24mm frame of regular 35mm film. This is opposed to the DX lenses, which cover a smaller area (thus the 1.5x multiplier). The D3 is the first digital Nikon camera to use a full size 36x24mm sensor.

That hood looks like a seperate piece so it could be removeable or at least cut off.

That hood is metal and part of the lens body, but I bet a clip on mattebox would still work and probably not vignette on the Red. Exciting times huh?

Vignetting? Why?
chuck colburn
08-23-2007, 11:47 AM
If you take another look at the sunshade on the wider zoom you will see four cut outs in it, these are to allow the light in for the corners of the frame.

Well that means you probally can't put very much of anything in front of it without causing vignetting.

Hi Chuck,
Also the max T stop could be reduced before vignetting occurs & strange shaped bokeh may then result.

Could be Stephen.
I'm not saying it can't be done, and as Evin said, mayby a small clip on filter holder will work. Elsewise I don't see how the lens can accept filtration as it doesn't seem to accept drop in filters.

Hi Mr White,
Shading the lens has the same effect as a water house stop
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterhouse_stop
The Bokeh on a wide open lens should be round, you may end up with strange shapes due to shading the front element.

I think I'm missing something here. I looked at several sites about the 14-24 lens and I can't find one that says it is a full frame (24x36mm) lens. The other thing is, in the site listed below it shows the aspherical elements in blue shading an it does not included the front one. Mayby I'm seeing it wrong but in the photos it sure looks like that front element has a bump in the center which I would say makes it an aspheric.

If a mattebox is going to be mounted on the RED Rails anyway, couldn't you just slide the mattebox in front of the lens?
chuck colburn
08-23-2007, 02:58 PM
Hi Jack,
Yeah but you might have to slide it so far over the lens that you would not be able to use filters.

Anything not full frame has been consistently labeled DX by Nikon. Also, there are product photos of the (full-frame) D3 with that 14-24 lens attached. I know you can shoot cropped on it but it'd be mighty weird choice for a product photo. And the pricing, weight and overall look are similar to the (full-frame) 17-35. So I'd be 99% sure it's full frame. I'd say 100% sure but I have my "killjoy" reputation to uphold ;)

Apologies for my recent lack of humor. I have a nasty cold. Filmmaker's Gang, I sent you a nice PM.
So the summary is that we are hopeful that a clip-on mattebox / small filter in front might JUST work because we have a 1.5x crop, right?
This is a sexy lens but no VR?
We have to see if the still lens's VR actually works well in motion with the Birger mount. If it doesn't, lack of VR will have saved us money.
f/1.4 would also make it übersexy.
Of course! I'd settle just for 2.0... It's a pity Nikon hasn't made any cool ultra-sharp sub-2.8 wide primes - guess they think the higher ISO has them covered. And they prefer a cheaper, lighter lens. And since the Zeiss ZF prime range hits 2.8 at 25mm, I'm not to hopeful for a wide sub-2.8 from them either. But then if you go below 2.8 you probably really want something with excellent focus marks, long focus throw, etc - eg cine lens. I ended up getting a Nikon 24mm 2.0 which is has long, smooth focus and is a decent compromise IMHO for $150.

It's doubtful Nikon will ever make f1.4 wide zooms. Their 28mm f1.4 prime is fetching $2700+ on eBay. Yikes.
I picked up a 28mm f2.0 AI for $120, and a 20mm f2.8 AIS for $200 so I am happy. :)

Yeah, but unlike the 17-35mm this is a "G" series lens and doesn't have an aperture ring. It is basically useless until Birger releases their Nikon version.

Best of my knowledge, that 28mm f1.4 is out of production. Whats awesome, is if you bought one when they were being produced for less than $2000, youd have made a nice profit.

Does anyone know if there is a wide Nikon prime lens between 14mm and 18mm at f2.8 available anywhere? If so, where can I get one, and for how much?
That 14-24 f2.8 looks really nice and wide, but I'd rather have manual aperture rings on my lenses if possible. The 17-35 looks more appealing to me because of this. But I really just want a 14 or 15mm prime f2.8.

E-bay also continues to let UK powerseller cpt_maximus (1870) to continue to sell though I know have caught him twice illegally selling copies of my DVD.
All ebay does is remove the evidence. 6 Months later, I hear from a buyer that my dvd quality was not very good, well it was a bootleg again from this guy. I reported him a 2nd time, my dvd bootleg listings sold and listed were deleted yet he continues to sell. He sells a fireplace DVD-r that Im sure is stolen too.
Ebay does not punish him, he continues to pirate. Rather than ban this guy for life, freeze his paypal account and pay us pirated producers, he's safe to do his job. I listed my complaint to ebay, they dont respond. I put it on their safety forum to warn others, and in 48 hrs they pull my message since I actually list another ebayers illegal activities.
What a joke. Ebay is the youtube.com of illegal sales... if you want to make money - copy and sell DVDs until someone stops you... wait 6 months and do it again. No wonder, Hollywood is suing everyone.
