Anyone know of a place in or around LA that rents out LTO machines?

Maybe Abel Cine or they can direct you to the right place if not.

Renting an LTO seems a bit odd given that you would need to install the proper host controller, software, etc.. Perhaps the better way to go is to have a service place your data onto LTO tape in your desired format?

It's not that tricky to be honest. And maybe the guy wants a long term rental. If it's just a couple of tapes though- yeah look for a service instead.

I know it's not that tricky. It's just not a normal rental item if you have to rent a SAS HBA card or SCSI card along with a unit. And then there's really no way around buying the software yourself, which is 25% of the cost of owning an LTO kit right there.

There's people out there who will rent out anything I suppose. And for LTO rentals, one of the Cache-A units or even an older "legacy" Quantum LTO-3A would make more sense as they don't require extra software and can connect via ethernet.

Agree totally with Jeff .... there's a whole bunch of factors to consider with LTO back-up .... we offer a very cheap LTO back-up service to LTO 3 or LTO 4 tape ... just courier your drives/CF cards over to us and we'll take care of the rest.

LTO 4 tape back-up (800gbs) at $80 per tape
LTO 3 tape back-up (400gbs) at $40 per tape

If you're shooting and editing RED in LA and need a first class color finish, we'll do you a great bundled deal of transcoding .r3ds to ProRes, back-up to LTO, editorial screenings from QT Firewire drive as well as great color correction and lay-back to HDCAM-SR.

We don't use any expensive HEAVYIRON hardware (Pablo) but we deliver a superb Apple and SCRATCH based RED production and post workflow service .... probably transcode and backup all your data for less than you could rent a decent LTO system.

Give us a call and come over and check out our RED RAWworks services.
