Well...

Looks like our Red (ser no. 1975) has been stolen in London. I'm in Australia right now, but my guys in London are dealing with the police now.

I'll post more details as I know them but for now it's definitely:

our body (1975)
our 18-50mm lens and 50-150mm lens
some variety of mounts like the handles and basic production pack etc.
1 red drive
probably our CF cards too (8GB) (i'll check)
our redbricks (X 5) and charger
probably our Element Technica top plate
the Red branded hard-case

that should be about it.

Info on the apparent culprit will follow including a scan of the driver's license copy that was taken.

Sorry for the incomplete details, I thought I'd post quickly in case any of you suddenly get offered a "deal"...

We're obviously pretty upset by this... we're not a big hiring house (or a big company of any kind) we do a little hiring to help keep us in pocket change while we work on our independent films... so anyway... they got us. Bastards.

If you hear or see anything... Please PM me. I will check at least daily.

And if there's a blacklist for camera bodies... could 1975 please go on it.

Thanks,

Michael Stanmore :dupe:

Way sorry to hear of this Michael...

Most of us work for a living...but unfortunately others feel the need to steal for a living. That is utterly despicable...

Hopefully the police will be able to find these goons quickly and recover your stuff.

I suggest the serial # be embossed boldly by RED on the side of each camera....

Yes, marked at "stolen" in our system. If it turns up here or at Pinewood, we'll be alerted.

Sorry, Michael, I hate writing these posts.

Yep definitely stolen. Forged ID and documents. Police are aware.

Please keep an eye out especially if you're in London obviously. I'll post all details of the guy's "name" and photo ID etc once we've dealt with insurance company.

This was our entire kit - Red Camera body, Lenses, All accessories, CF cards, Drives, Macbook Pro, Redrock Mattebox and Filters, Ronford F4 tripod

Hi Brent,

What is the possition for Epic upgrade when the camera has been stolen. Are option 1 & 2 still available to the original owner?

I haven't brought this up with the Red folk yet... obviously I see at least a couple of Scarlets in our future...

I don't know. IF the insurance comes through (I don't trust those god-forsaken slimy bastards one iota) then we'll take it from there.

Let's hope no-one else has to face this question.

Sorry to hear that, Michael - will keep our ears to the ground. In the meantime it'd be great to post a picture of this guy so we can be on the lookout (you never know someone might recognize him too?).

All the best,

I ask that any owners who have had their camera stolen contact either me (brent - at - red - dot - com) or Kelly (kelly - at - red - dot - com) to discuss options. We, of course, are sympathetic to customers in this situation and will discuss further with them on a one-on-one basis.

I'll keep an eye out fella; and tell the crews that come through.

Wouldn't it be useful if the cameras incorporated their serial numbers as part of the R3D file title and this were hard wired to the system - this would be (A) a good way to keep track of cameras on a nine camera shoot (which could have all sorts of troubleshooting applications) and (b) act as a deterrent to thievery because submitting rushes to post houses would become something that could act as a "flag". Couple this with a "stolen" page on Red.com or sticky thread maybe.

The guy who stole our camera has been caught and was due in a Magistrates court in London yesterday. His name is John Kaely.

This obviously won't get us any closer to getting our kit back, which won't happen... but at least this guy, who is accused of several such thefts, will likely be prevented from continuing.

That's great to hear he was caught Michael. Gives me hope that the individual that stole our camera will be caught someday too.

Yeah. Of course he's just a small fish... a patsy who did the jobs for others who were smart enough to stay at arms length from any day to day thievery...

but something primal inside me still rejoices... :)

Now just waiting for the insurance still... and dreaming of a DSMC future.

Dang- this sounds like the plot from a Guy Ritchie movie now...

Michael Stanmore
12-17-2009, 06:17 AM
well... in Guy Ritchie movies even the gypsies in Snatch had their shit together more than this idiot... who as far as we can tell is just an old school Chandleresque loser with nowhere to go but down. I'd feel a little sorry for the guy if he didn't steal our stuff...

But then I'm an old softie... and anyway I hate the thought that the real villains who make the proper money off a racket like this are never going to be caught... just this loser who was too dumb to know he was being hung out to dry.

IANAL, but AFAIK Magistrates courts in the UK cannot impose custodial sentences, only fines.

So it probably won't stop him from continuing... :-(

I can microchip my dog. A person with a cell phone can be located. On-Star can find a Cadillac. Is it time to make it possible to locate these cameras using technology embedded by the manufacturing process? That could practically stop this from happening in the first place if it was publicised as a Red Digital Cinema Product with an embedded "TRS (Theft Recovery System)". How nice it would be to launch a software app and find my stolen gear... notify the authorities... or perhaps not.

yeah I think so, but he's been "outed" and now his picture, real name, and MO can be circulated throughout England to all the hiring houses and everyone else.

Yeah there was a large discussion about this... the conclusion of which was really just... get over it and claim the insurance...which is what we'd do if any of our other filmmy equipment gets stolen.

Hey Michael

Sorry for your loss. Could you PM me the ID details?

We had 3 HD cameras stolen some years ago by someone with genuine (but in a false name) drivers license, utility etc.

He was only caught becuase we exchanged notes with another rental company that had the same experience and we realized it was the same guy.

The police ID'd him somehow from his various pictures, we all ID'd him in an electronic lineup. He dragged out pleading not guilty for months, and changed his plea to not guilty days before the trial.

He was given 100 hours community service (unpaid). We reckon he stole at least £30,000 pounds worth of gear, so that works out to an income to him of £300 per hour... after being caught. And it seems no-one on the prosecution side felt the need to ask him what had become of our gear.

We did not succeed in claiming on insurance as it turned out we covered for theft but not fraud, which this was. We have of course since changed that!

Best of luck with the insurance, and leave the rest to karma. That Red will die one day, and there is only one place to get it fixed!

Great Idea.

I know a guy that had a stunt horse that is very valuable as it took so long to train, he taught it to bite every one that came near except him and he controlled it when he rode the horse. It never was stolen.

We will keep an eye out for the cameras.

How about his pic on here, or would we risk getting sued for libel from the scumbag! :violent5:

Hey, just thought I'd update that the scumbag who took our gear, and the gear from some of the other places in London... was given 40 months jail.

So... I guess that's pretty good for basic grand larceny... so I'm pretty pleased.

Great news. Good to see at least one scumbag in jail. Although he might get out in half that time with good behaviour. If it was 3 and half years minimum it might be better.

Did you recover any of the stolen kit?

Good. Justice served.
I'd LOVE to hear that the guy who stole my HDX-900 and Pro-35 was in the "big house".
Cheers,

LOL yeah next season of Prison Break being shot on it I hear...

But no we won't be seeing that gear again. We freaked out for a while when the insurance folk tried to screw us... but we got our lawyer to write them a letter telling them what we thought of that...so we're getting paid.

Yeah this guy will be out in under a year is my prediction. The UK can't afford to pay full room and board for this guy when there are drug dealers and murderers and rapists about needing that stability...

Well... whatever. I try to only squint at it and it looks like a win.

Bring on Epic and Scarlet.
