With all the excitement and advancements being brought about by RED...does anyone have a feel of how this is affecting the current sales of all the non-RED HDCAMs, CAMCORDERS, PRO VIDEO CAMS, etc.?

a lot of people are taking a wait and see approach but new cameras for all markets are constantly being released so everyone is always waiting for the next great cam. i think the scarcity of red ones over the next 6-12 months, any early released footage shot by red users and appearance of red in some rental houses will all help to kick digital cinema into gear. then once red gets production numbers up and steady, pros and prosumers will be attracted to red's low pricepoint. so i think we'll start to see a shift begin about a year from now.
my only question is what will red's competition do to counter and ultimately what will red do to counter-counter? red one should pave the way for an amazing red two and red mini future product lineup.

don't forget, RED mobilizes [also] a market that was not approached before. A new mid-market. Somewhere inbetween HV-20, modded HDV/DVCproHD/P2 with 35mm adapter and in best case used cheaper HDcams.
All us indies, steady ops etc.
Of course, just besides all the other professionals.
But I bet, the majority didn't buy 35mm or HDcam (big film, big video) before, hence was not relevant in the market you ask I think.
Thats my conclusion upon asking myself the same question.

I've heard the guys at a couple of shops saying that their companies where holding off on multiple f23 packages and mulitple new Viper packages because of Red, and those companies all had several Reds on order.

yeah - however, digital cinematography is the smaller market for sony & panasonic. The largest chunks of their sales still goes into broadcast, sports etc.
However, the sales people now seem to realize that there is a niche which they didnīt understand / realize.

I've got to think that when RED starts mass producing these sweet, little "Irish Puppies", some of the non-RED, medium-end market manufacturers will have to look closely at their pricing and adjust accordingly. I think this is where we'll see some shifts in pricing/packaging. Although, the lower-end manufacturers may already have a bit more wiggle room to lower their prices to compete. Still, I doubt that the higher-end manufactures will be affected...at first, that is!!!

I'm curious how people are going to record sound until it's enabled?

That should not surprise anyone.
RED has done a great job, so far, promoting and showing Red One. NAB, IBC, CineGear and all, the Peter Jackson short, trend magazines and all the buzz on the web. But as far as a reliable product widely available we're not there YET.
I'm not casting any doubts, I'm just making a reasonable assessment. The Vipers, D20, etc. or even the F23 have been here for a while or are a expected improvement of previous models. Studios and Insurance Companies have a track record with this gear and all the calculated risks.
RED is a whole different deal, we'll need a few examples of established Hollywood feature directors like Steven Soderbergh projects to really put RED system where it belongs and it will grab everybody's attention generating the expected revolution on the industry.

Its incredible. Must have something to do with "NAB Reports" either
A) Dissing the Red in the most moronic manner or
B) Not mentioning Red at all.
But its not working. I get calls from all over the place regarding this new camera.

I agree, unless of course, they live in a complete vacuum (as some engineers do...) Lets also consider that there are many people on this planet who have never heard of Coke, Pepsi or "Oh my goodness" McDonald's either! As some have commented on RED's extensive marketing efforts, lets consider how much and to what extent some other companies market their goods and still have not reached full awareness.
As far as other companies reaction to RED.... Well, we probably will not know all the details until they decide to make an announcement. I know some top execs at Panasonic. Its no secret that they are developing a 4k sensor. The CAC technology being utilized the the HPX line is first step part of their assault on this market as well. They are a few years away though, and I have no word yet on what type of code or medium will be used to record on.
We have held off on several large HD Camera purchases in favor of waiting for our Reds. The recent delay almost made us take on a new camera, but we came up with a creative work-around. So while Rome is burning we are waiting...
Cheers,
G

You realize that once Rome fell, Europe underwent the Dark Ages :shifty: (a bloody terrible time in human history). Hopefully your analogy ends at the fall of Rome and skips several hundreds years towards the Renaissance.
Until RED Ones comes out in large numbers (at least until summer 2008) it will affect Varicam and CineAlta sales. It won't affect the prosumer market much, with price still being the biggest barrier. A lot of it depends on the final output, so many productions destined for broadcast won't see much Red use, high-end corporate and cinema applications will RED be most desired.
