Hi,

This might have been covered but I was wondering which features will and will not be enabled on the first release.

I have no connection to Red so I don't know. But if I had to guess, I'd say they are working on implementation and testing on a continuing basis, and we'll only know what features are in and working at such time as the first cameras show up on their respective doorsteps. Jim has already mentioned releasing firmware updates over the following months to enable more features, so whatever the initial set turns out to be, I assume it will change in short order.

I was just wondering.

Maybe the first camera will only do 4K, 2K, 1080P and 720P at 24fps.

This would mean that high speed shots, sound, and other "features" will come later.

I wonder what is considered a feature. What can the camera's "on set" do?

There was much debate (practically bloodshed) about loosing the HD recording modes inthe camera. Does anyone know what has happened with that?

The HD recording modes were to be RGB and some of the last features enabled. It seems that a popular decision on the matter was the possibility of scaled RAW modes -- or having 2K RAW scaled from the 4K sensor area instead of 1080p RGB. RED is looking into this possibility... 1080p is absolutely necessary and must be easily derived from the 4K sensor area. There are still lots of workflow questions though and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Seemed the general consensus on 720p is the only reason people even wanted it was for the potential 120fps ability. But there's a good possibility for 2K RAW (cropped sensor, not scaled) @ about 100fps.

Anyway, that's a general summary of where it stands. All indicators are showing that cameras will ship next week... I suppose anything can happen and I hope they do ship. It's hard to say just what features will be enabled, but I bet we'll get an official list of enabled features when the cameras do ship.

Great,

Thanks Jeff.

It will be nice to see what comes out of that huge debate. Of course, the online forum discussion is only a part of the decision.

I hope that off speed shots and sound are implemented pretty soon. I think that shooting double system practically negates it as an EFP camera if you are delivering some sort of, "day of" file or hard drive to the client. (IE TV network) Syncing would be a bit to much work to make that a reasonably cost effective solution.

All things are subject to change, but read this statement of Jim Jannard just four days ago reference 1080p and 720p:

"In the last topic about 1080P/720P, someone posted the idea about two builds that could be loaded independently of each other. That idea has solved a problem for us and we will, in fact, use that idea going forward."

Let's not jump to conclusions about the eventual setups and genres usage of RED One yet. If what Jim mentioned is incorporated, changing the firmware setup of a RED One to optimize it for either cine style or EFP style production workflows could be as easy as a few seconds new setup download from a CF card or USB.

Can't Redcine be used to downconvert from 4k or 2k to 1080p?

Nathan,

Yes. But there was much debate about having the ability to record these frame sizes directly. The main argument flying back and forth was that it would be easier to be able to shoot these formats rather than convert or downconvert images

I do not wish to ignite this debate as it really is mute with Gibby's post. If the camera has switchable firmware options then a user can make this choice for their individual needs and make any necessary future changes as well.

It appears we will have the best of both worlds and this is great for any RED user.

I love the idea of scaled 2K RAW at higher frame rates rather than 720P RGB. With the availability of proxies for monitoring during editorial and RAW data for grading what's not to like? Obviously native RedCode support in FCP and working with clients who have at least one FCP seat will make this much smoother. RedCine is the answer for everyone else - of course rendering times could make that harder to swallow.

Also note Graeme has been touting the advantage of 2K frames vs 1080 because you avoid some potential edge pixel issues.

I think the non-enabled feature that people are gonna be pissing and moaning about is the lack of sound recording...

I'd say you have a point there. With all the debate about EFP and ENG uses, I think having to shoot double system at the onset would be a drag, but we know that it will not last. I am pretty sure it will be a pretty quick update, and it might even be in the first release, we don't know that it won't be.
