I did some tests on an underexposed shot at 3k last night in RCX build 44-2 and exported them at 1080p to Pro Res 444. Overall they are not as clean as I would like. The lighting wasn't enough and we were over cranking so I wanted to process them in RCX to see what I could get.

I did passes at low and hi debayer with 0 and 6 on the denoise adjuster.

The result between the 4 passes is that there are subtle differences when viewing two clips and a 'difference' mode is selected. without that and just going by A-B comparison you notice a difference in sharpness on bright red highlights but that is about it.

Overall I'm yet to see the denoise in any of the RED software do much of anything. RCX is a step in the right direction but it definitely has a ways to go.

I'm definitely considering selling my RED 18-50 and getting a Canon 1d MarkIV for use in certain situations. Anyone need a lens?

BTW what does DRX mean?

The denoise is specifically chroma denoise. It doesn't effect the luma.

You might want to try a faster lens... I've had great results shooting at 320 tungsten on the RED using canon EF 1.4 lenses....

But without seeing your results it's impossible to give any opinion.

Night is night and should look like night.... I'm not a fan of grey skies at midnight on a clear eve.

If your still getting a little more noise than you care for, try neat video... this plugin has a lot of fans.

Thank you for the clarification Graeme. That makes a lot of sense now.

I'm not talking about the sensor being noisy. the point is that because of a number of reasons (only one softbox, 120 shutter speed, poor ambient lighting, RED 18-50 at T3) the shot is a little dark at least for a kids toy commercial (not much artistic license there). Anyway I am commenting about RCX and not the sensor.
