View Full Version : Red in Asia
With threads calling Redusers from different countries popping up, thought of doing the same.
Haven't seen many posting from users from Asia, any Redusers in the forum from Asia? Especially South East Asia? Singapore, Thailand etc?
Maybe we should have a special section for Redusers from different part of the world, otherwise this section may be filled up with such calls :)

I travel to singapore quite often. It will be good to have a network of Redusers around our area, since it seems like not many Redusers from a particular Asian country in the forum at the moment.
whats ur nature of business?

One here in Tokyo, Japan.
As far as I'm aware I'm the only one in the country who will have one for quite some time... :) Methinks the rental market will be a nice little money earner for me come shipping time given my absolute monopoly for probably at least six months!
yeah but the issue would be the difficulty in getting a replacement camera should the camera breaks down as no one around has the red.. :(

I am based in Los Angeles but do quite a bit of work in Hong Kong and China. I have two RED ONEs on reserve and reserved another one for a colleague in Southern China.
From what I heard, orders have been taken from buyers in Hong Kong and China as well. There is also a map illustrating orders from all over the world (in RED website? I don't remember).

I have worked in Hong Kong and China, but it has been awhile. In 1994 I directed an ESPN International documentary featuring the FESPIC Games in Beijing. The FESPIC Games are like the Olympics for physically challenged athletes. Opening cereminies were in a stadium with 120,000 people. There were athletes from 45 countries around the world. Very inspirational...
My REDUser avatar is a shot of me shooting in Tienanmen Square in 1994.
Our crew stayed and shot in Hong Kong before and after going to Beijing.
In Asia, I have also worked in India, Japan, Viet Nam, Thailand, and Singapore. I lived in Viet Nam for a year, and went back there in 1994 to shoot a television program.
I'm based in California but work worldwide. I really enjoy visiting and working in Asia.

Hahaha how true... Oh well there aren't many of us on this tiny island and whatever are out there didn't have much of a choice other than to choose between Sony and Panny (not so JVC)
It' great that know we have another chioce available, but weather the big boys are willing to drop the HDX900, VariCams and CineAltas for the RED is something we have to wait and see. They have invested too much money on the big chunky expensive decks and many have not broke even.

Definitely, the most attractive aspect of the Red is its open architecture and the commitment to integrating and working with all our existing workflows, hardware and applications.
What has become very obvious is that the lack of innovation and flexibility in all preceding solutions have come from manufacturers that want to milk as much as they can out of the customer and sell the entire production/post-production pipeline by maintaining proprietary decks/media.
What projects do you intend to start using the red on? I would be very interested in seeing it in action.

Sorry Dude, RED is not open but only stick with the RED APPLE.
Certainly, n terms of post architecture FCP is the only one supported out of the gate so far, but red cine and red code will transcode into formats that are usable by other NLEs.
In terms of hardware architecture, it's refreshing to see that they're not trying to force us to use P2/proprietary media. The fact that it shoots to CF is brilliant.

Hi Marcus,
Great to know you are working on a feature, but I think the earliest Red One to come into SG is FlowerChildProject's camera. I currently trying to source for funds on a HD telemovie project. Hoping to shoot it on Jan 2008, after that I am hoping my next project will be on the Red....

Hi Marcus, similarly, I am looking at shooting a feature on the Red next year as well. Do let me know if you need any help for your feature. I can edit on FCP and Avid, grip and direct/AD.

Hi Marcus,
I'm thinking that by the time you start production on your feature late next year, rentals for the Red would have dropped a bit.
My Red is scheduled to ship on Nov 10th. I'm still thinking whether to fly down to collect it personally or not (depending on work commitments) cuz i'm starting a long form project possible mid-Oct.
Anyways, have fun prepping your feature..and maybe we can chat some more when you have firmer dates.

well good thing that im enrolled in Crazy Filmmaker program (http://filmschool.ph/press/068.php) in IAFT, because the RED Digital Cinema Inc. has delivered the first of a total of five RED Cameras in our school, making it the first film school in Asia to incorporate the vastly publicized new generation of cameras. The fully digital camera that uses a new generation "Mysterium" CMOS imaging sensor represents the next generation of cameras for feature films with a resolution of 4k - four times of the current "High Definition" format. It encompasses a totally digital workflow, recording directly on hard drives and solid-state media instead of tape or physical film.,

I can't believe that no one from India, home to Bollywood, has a RED. The real REd owner from India, will you speak up? :-)

The Red NAB 2009 reel was fantastic and much applauded. I converted it to become DCI compliant, up loaded onto the Doremi server, then projected it thru a Christie 2K projector for the 600+ seat theater of the Director's Guild of the Philippines yesterday. Yes, the Digital Cinema at the 4th floor of SM North Edsa is DCI compliant.
Many thanks for attending

We've got 3 units our own and doing 4 features on Red.
Someone told me a couple of days ago that supposedly there are 80 Red One in Malaysia now.
