View Full Version : New RPP Case from Red

As I'm sure many others have, I've noticed the new Red RPP compact case shows the case holding the lenses with the front element down. This struck me as odd, as every lens case I've dealt with in my life has the front element up. I've also researched this forum, and the consensus seems to be that lenses are stored with the front element facing upwards to avoid pulling on the rear cap that's attached to the PL mount, or pulling on the delicate iris ring (Mitch from Abel and Ketch were two of the several sources).

Does anyone know if that's the only way to store the lenses in the new RPP case?

Does anyone have any further insight regarding whether storing the lenses facing downwards is a serious problem?

The old RPP case was huge, and I've heard the Innerspace case requires some modifications in order to fit the future 18mm, so the new compact case is very appealing to me. I'm sure Red has done their research regarding lens storage, but this does seem to go against the norm.

Drop a foam doughnut into the bottom of the holes and put the lenses in front element up. That also keeps the lens cap from staying in the bottom of the hole when you pull the lens out... and it leaves the lens cap up where you can see the focal length that you've taped on it rather than hunting through them after a hurried AC has put them back in random holes.

I would think that the PL mount is not something to worry about when pulling the lens out. If it can't support those few pounds on a straight pull for a few seconds then I'd figure there is something structurally wrong with it and it needs servicing.

Lifting on the rings on the other hand- that I would frown on.

IT's not the weight on the PL mount that's the issue, it's the real possibility that the PL cap may unscrew from the mount and the whole lens drop. Just flip the lens over in the case so the top is up -- on the RPPs the front of the lens is the widest part so if there is room to store it face down then there is room to fit it flipped over.
