View Full Version : I just did it: I took the plunge!

I've been on the fence for months about what new camera to purchase and came close to getting a demo SPX800 (sans lens but with everything else) a couple of weeks ago for around $9,500. The RED is really more camera than I can justify for my business (and budget), but I can't see spending 5 figures on any other camera when the dropoff in value is so incredibly steep.

This reply from Jim in another thread sealed the deal:

I assume once production hits 4th gear it won't be so bad. Has there been a mention of how many units would ship per month at full production speed?

If you are so inclined, the sooner the better. Deposits are fully refundable if you cahnge your mind. We expect the line to grow at IBC.

I had to get in on this while the getting's good. Hello fellow RED owners!

Congrats, man. I envy everyone who has been able to put a deposit down. I'm still financially unable too, but I've got my heart set on it since what seems forever. I keep hope alive though, and will continue to follow every detail till I can finally afford it.

Welcome sir, you must now take the initiation rites of passage...wet noodle please.

Congratulations dear lady,

I suspected from an earlier post you were not really "on the fence", but with both feet hanging over on the red side... just waiting for enough encouragement to step into the RED pasture. And when you start wondering if the price is justifiable, remember that RED IS UPGRADEABLE! Possibly forever.

edit: just think how much closer you would be to acquisition if you had purchased back then! Sorry, I had to gig you just a little for vacillating.

Welcome to the club.

I think I put my deposit in before last year's IBC for the very same reasons: surge of reservations from the show and fully refundable deposit. Now you can sit back and watch the results from the early cameras. If you don't like it, you can get all of your money back. If you do like it, then you probably don't have to wait as long as many of us did.

Ha ha. Yes, I'm late to the party. I inherited a sum of money earlier this year. Had that happened a year ago, I likely would have reserved early this year when reservations re-opened. But, better late than . . . .

Bottom line is I'm a sucker for quality. Quality in technology. Quality in people. And the whole approach of Jim and his team to this venture is one that I wished I could have a hand in rewarding, even before I had the financial means to even think about buying the camera. And, yes, I am quite amped about owning the finest digital imaging system on the planet.

I'm calling to modify my yellow page ad Monday, hoping I'm still ahead of deadlines for publication this fall. Mine will now include a blurb like "featuring the RED Digital Cinema Camera". If only I could have it in time to shoot my short this fall!

ETA: Just an FYI re the "sir" thing, I'm one of the (apparently few) females to frequent the board and buy the camera. I wonder if I can get the RED accessories in pink? Just kidding, of course, as I hate pink. Now a nice, muted peach is a whole other matter.

Now that should bring a smile on a few faces...heh heh

Thanks km9000! Lived in Orlando very briefly in another life (when I thought I should at least try and put my law degree to use.) I left after only 4 months but do have fond memories of the city.

I'm in the Pensacola area, so if you're up this way and ever need another RED, let me know. I'm guessing I'll be getting the camera May-ish.

Congrats on taking the plunge!

I have fond memories of Pensacola. That was one of the last places I went with my family for vacation as a kid.... Before I lost my innocense....

As a favor to me girls, show your mugs 'cause we need some female vibes in here-sometimes the testosterone gets overwhelming...lol

LOL. Nice to know there are at least a couple other XXers around these parts.

Gender on the Internet is always so much fun. On discussion forums, I've almost always been presumed to be male. Okay, I expect that when talking about basketball (or even cameras or other technological forums.) But on my own Sopranos discussion forum, most newcomers presume I'm a man, too.

The relative anonymity of the net is a really good grounds to study the bases of stereotypes of all kinds. And I've certainly been surprised a few times to learn that a person I thought was in one demographic category turned out not to be.

Anyway, looking forward to learning much from my fellow RED owners . . . male and female.

O.K., I assume you don't wear briefs, but you profess to have training in writing briefs. So, would you like to correct the above statement? (We XYs hold you XXs to a higher standard.)

Well, of course, the statement contained a tacit assumption that any person under consideration is telling you the truth when they proclaim to belong to one demographic category or other, as the anonymity of the Net is also best friend to fraud. But, outside of forums where the intent is to actually find someone to "date" (virtually or otherwise) or where sex itself is somehow part of the subject matter, I just don't think the vast, vast majority of people feel much incentive to lie about their gender.

Wow! I was just talking about the use of bases when it appeared you meant basis and the fact you have training as a lawyer. (Just a thought, from the sounds of some of the posts on this forum, maybe you could do better representing RED ouners, rather than becoming one. Looks like a fertile field to me.)

I wasn't really quite sure what you were getting at but felt it would be impolite to not respond in some way, so I replied to what I thought you were saying. I should have just asked for clarification.

Yeah, I was using "bases" as the plural of "basis".

As for ever practicing law as a vocation, definitely not for me. Life itself is a tough enough occupation.:)
