Hello All,
I am thinking of purchasing a red package and was wondering if any of you can recommend a configuration? I have a general idea and have looked/read at RED.com, Reduser.net, etc... but not sure what i need to shoot nature, people, indoor/outdoor, etc. I will be building this from ground up and want to know medium (not minimum) package cost.
I like to get 35mm look to what I shoot, so...
What kind of lens? Nikon or RED?
Should I buy generic CF Card or RED?
RED Drives (RAID Storage) How many GB ? RED or Generic?
Which tripod to get?
Any suggestions on filters?
What would be the resale value?
Thanks in advance,
SK Indrani, redwannabee

Real Name dude or your going to get the boot soon...
For 35mm, a scarlet S35 with PL mount and nikon/canon mount but PL lenses will be the best. I don't know how the new scarlet/epic will work with nikon/canon lenses in regards to resolution. Right now on R1 you can only shoot 2K using a nikon lens, I don't see this concept changing for the new models.
Only buy RED CF cards, the day you use another brand and your once in a lifetime shot now has dropped frames your f'd.
Red drive for your price range, there are no generic.
I'd recommend a O'Connor 2060 with carbon legs.
Hot mirror filter
Depends on what RED you get but people are always going to want to buy new 99% of the time I would guess.

Casey, I believe his name is 'real'. It's just not a western name.
SK Indrani,
Lens choice entirely depends on your need and the objective of your shoot. As Casey rightly said, PL mounts are by far the best way to go.
Generic CF cards can be a viable budget buy. There is always a chance of dropped frames, data corruption , etc. But if you are willing to consider Nikon lenses for budgetary constraints, generic CF cards might provide for your immediate needs.
Drive: RED RAID, currently no generic available or possible. 640GB @ $900 is a sweet enough deal anyways.
Tripod is a matter of choice again. I know of comprehensive (head+legs) units available for ~$2000 that work. Not the best but they acceptably work.
Filters: A set of NDs and a Polarizer are a must in any decent package. A Hot Mirror is a smart buy too.
It might be good idea to rent a RED package for a trial and figure out what is there and what you need. You might find out that renting the unit might end up saving you $$$ in your final 'Buy List'.
Happy buying.

quick note, you can shoot 4K on the RED ONE with the appropriate Nikon lens.

.
this makes no sense. Nikons cover greater than 4k and more than cinema lenses.
SK, my question would be how much do you want to spend?

I stand corrected. Sorry about that, I haven't had a chance to use Nikon lenses on the R1 but from my previous understanding they were limited to 2K coverage, maybe that was just for the lenses made for nikon's APS-C sensor. Either way, thank you for correcting me, I'm going to look into this more.
