These are the issues that currently prevent me from switching from Clipfinder to RedCine-X for dailies processing and proxy outputting. You Red guys are probably aware or some of all of them, but I thought it might be useful to get them all in one place:
- No batch import. Should be able to drag entire directories into bin.
- Exporting timeline always creates a single QT file, even when export options are for "output clip with file name". Exporting bin creates multiple clips, but they seem to have numbers added to the end of their names (though this is easily fixable if necessary with a batch renaming utility).
- There seems to be no fast way to navigate between clips, e.g. a keyboard shortcut to jump to the next/previous edit point (when the viewer is showing clips on the timeline) or to the in point of the next/previous clip (when viewing clips from the bin). In fact, the only way to switch between clips from the bin seems to be to manually drag them into the viewer, way too labor intensive.
- Issues with artifacts in highlights in renders. (Like this (http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=519726&postcount=28).)
These are issues that should eventually be fixed, but that wouldn't prevent me from using RedCine-X in place of Clipfinder:
- Setting in/out points doesn't seem to work for clips not on a timeline.
- No undo.
- There should be an option to have double-clicked clips open directly in viewer rather than being added to timeline. Or perhaps the selected clip in the bin should show up in the viewer immediately.
- There's no visual indication of active window (matters for some keyboard shortcuts).
- Grades don't seem to be reflected on the timeline at all, and don't show up in the bin until the clip is clicked again.
- Sort indicators and dividers in column headers in bin list view are dark against dark background and hard to see.
- Hard to see selections in in icon mode. Orange border indicating selection becomes hidden for the clip the mouse is hovering over.
- Orange text of parameters hard to read through gray selection color. Particularly problematic as text of parameters becomes selected automatically when changing their value with scroll wheel.
- No Select All/None commands in bin, clip selection browser.
- Boundaries between clips hard to see in timeline.
- Icon size slider for bin should be disabled or hidden in list mode.
- Closable windows should have close boxes (and command-w should close windows, not hide the workspace).
- Timeline scrolls vertically and window not resizable.
- Would probably be more useful if scroll wheel scrolled timeline horizontally.
- Should be able to clear output location for "Output with clip name to selected folder" mode in export settings, and have application prompt for location when exporting.
- No way that I can see to move clips between bins (should maybe be able to drag and hover over bin tab), rename bins, create new bins, etc.
- Clips deleted from bins are retained on timeline, but cannot then be dragged back into bins.
These are feature requests:
- RSX file support would be nice.
- Documented XML file format would be nice.
- Should be able to use scroll wheel in viewer to move through frames, not just zoom (perhaps with modifier key).
- Batch monitor should give frames/sec and estimated completion times.
More as I find them.
Overall, the app seems to be coming along pretty nicely, given that it's an early beta, and is impressively responsive even on some of our lesser machines (e.g. 2007 MacBook Pros). I think building a first-class in-house tool was exactly the right move for Red. Keep up the great work, guys.
