View Full Version : "RED serial number badges," or, "Will I get totally geeked-out for NAB2007?"

How geeked out will I be if I wear a homemade badge with my RED serial number proudly displayed at this year's NAB? Nothing on the badge except a HUGE four-digit number (in red, of course). . . How do ya think that'll play with the ladies?

The T-shirt is somehow a lot less geeky than a homemade badge.

That said the T-shirt does rank pretty high on the GEEK-O-METER, just the badge is off the charts in comparison.

Hey Ralph, how about you do the opposite, a red t-shirt with your serial in black? That'd be a lot more flashy...

It seems the "Ladies" in Vegas don't care what you wear as long as the platinum American Express card is taped to your forehead.

I like the t-shirt idea but might make one unwelcomed in other manufacturers' booths, eh?

I like the t-shirt idea but might make one unwelcomed in other manufacturers' booths, eh?They won't even know what the number means. Everybody's in denial. And when RED does ship, and people start making great images that blow everyone away with it--they won't even know what bit them in the ass so hard. The nay-sayers won't have even have seen it coming. Heard another stupid story, told second-hand, from some film DP guy today:

Sound Recordist to Film DP Guy: "So what do you think about this new RED camera?"
Film DP Guy: "Well, RED just won't have the latitude of the Dalsa. The Dalsa has 12 stops of latitude; RED only has XX stops."

Well, golly gee f-----g whiz! Lemme see . . . I could RENT (never buy, 'cause they're not for sale) a Dalsa Origin with a single zoom lens for $18,000, and be able to shoot for FIVE WHOLE rental days, or I could OWN a RED ONE and shoot whatever I want, whenever I want, at whatever frame rate I want, with virtually ANY lens I want (including that huge PILE of Nikkors that I ALREADY OWN), for the rest of my life, all for just the price of renting a Dalsa for a few days. Hmmmm . . . Don't you just love it?

Ken Corben

Ralph I know what you mean...

I mentioned to a DP that I was AC'ing for that I had a Red reservation and he just laughed at me.

He who laughs last...?

Ralph Oshiro

Yeah, I know! So, I go talk to this other DP on a some big TV show that's shooting with four F900s, and I go, "So what do you think of this new RED camera? He's a DP on an all-HDCAM set, so I thought he may have at least SOME awareness of RED. And he answers, "Well, I'm more excited about getting one of those Sony V1s!" Huh? HUH? WAKE THE F--K UP, HOLLYWOOD! READY OR NOT, HERE COMES RED!!!

Holy Shit!!! Ralph, have you got TWO RED reservations?!? OMG!!!No, I'm cheating! It's my friend and business partner's reservation number--the one I talked into reserving at the last minute. He never goes on the Internet, so I thought I could "claim" his number.

I think there should be a slogan for NAB, and people can put it on whatever they like; T-shirt, cap, flask - along with their number. It'd be fun to see people sending in images of others they spot displaying it somehow. Maybe even a prize for the most original use of the slogan. Reading this thread what about:

"XXXX the naysayers - #445"

Bring on the suggestions, I think it'd be fun.

Great idea! This is what I've got so far... I'm thinking a red t-shirt with black text. On the front, it shows my number "#1443" with the text about an inch tall. On the back, it says:

1st Red Scare: 1917-1920
2nd Red Scare: 1947–1957
3rd Red Scare: Coming soon to a theater near you.

I want one. Really. I'm not even going to NAB (I'm on the wrong coast) but I want a shirt like that anyways. Does anyone know a good place to have a custom shirt printed for cheap?

I'm wondering who has 1138.... (THX 1138)

While I'd love to have that number, I was watching Superman II the other day and Lex Luthor's prison number was my RED number (1246). I turned to my nephew and said, "Maybe this means I'll be shooting a Superman sequel one day..."

I'm #1110... It has no significance that I'm aware of. Except that 1110 is the binary form of 14, which also holds no significance that I am aware of.

But I'm curious where RED #666 is going... Anyone here have #1313? I would've liked to have that one, but not enough to trade in my current position in line.

I wonder if George Lucas is looking into RED or has a reservation. But I think we already had a thread with that discussion a few weeks ago.
