View Full Version : New camera order - timeframe?

General question; if a RED camera were ordered say in early December is there an educated estimate for when that camera might be delivered?

I expect that currently there must be a huge number of folks that are in line ahead of any new orders but just curious about how long the line might be.

I'm reminded of Ralphie and Randy waiting to see Santa in "A Christmas Story"

Man in Line for Santa: Young man. Hey, kid! Just where do you think you're going?
Ralphie: Going up to see Santa.
Man in Line for Santa: [scoffs] The line ENDS here. It begins THERE.
[Points to the very end of a very long line]

After IBC, after people get a good look at the cameras that are being released and after the LART tests in October--- there will be no telling how long that line is going to be... Why wait, if you have a $1000 do it right now. If you feel you may not have the money to buy it later... cancel and get your money back. The important thing is get your place in line right now before the coming avalanche of orders.

Just my 2c...

Cheers -- Andrew

its actually 1750 if you want to get on board right now.. If you order today you are lookin at a spring 08 shipment...however, after IBC I would say maybe summer 08.. but im not sure.. I would defiantly order asap!

What about orders placed earlier this year - say April? Given the outlay; it takes months to prepare the cashflow - some advanced warning would be much appreciated!!

I've heard many good things about the Red camera and I'm very much interested but the waiting time is just too long. That turns me off a bit. No matter how a good a camera is, imho, I just can't wait 6 months to a year for a camera so I can work on my projects.

Zakaree,

can you transcode this.....seems this might clear up where things stand....I just ordered a second camera moments ago....Monday, 8:25pm mountain time

Now....my order number from RED is: Order #: 525505199
given you just quoted camera number 1750.....today, what does my order number translate to in camera number?

I'm hoping that's not 5,199 ??

Thanks,
Johnny

Check that....i see....you meant it's $1,750 to get a camera ordered! NOT camera numbe 1750 in the pipeline. I'm assuming then that my latest order number some how coincides with the camer body number meaning it is camera number 5,199 of the red pipeline.

blasted.....well, what would a time prediction/extrapulation put you at guestimating a possible (not to hold you to it) kind of time frame of delivery?

Way to go Johnny,
You planning to do aquatic 3D features with two cams?

Best of luck,
Mark.

Hey Mark,
Nah....I'll leave that to the the other two guys.....I was giving thought to the shoots i currently do and have gotten used to having one camera in the housing and the other topside....no explanation needed for you.

makes life much simpler for topside shooting and a great option as a backup. So....I'll already have an array of glass, CF & red drive 2nd battery etc...so it kind of seemed like an easy decision for me to throw down for a second body. Hell....it's only money and believe me I'm not much attached to the stuff as you would know if you were here at my place becuase it goes out as quick as it comes in.

But definately i figure if i'm on a shoot where the red is the selling point i better have a 2nd body since i'm not going to get another sent out to me next day air if something happens.

Well....that's way more cautious than i was in the old days. how perspectives change from 40 on.....

Hey tell me about the perspective changes, mind you that may also be my body telling me I need to invest in some bi-focals!

If I could I'd also like to look at having a second cam but for that I guess I'll rely on the one thing that will surely happen in all areas where RED's are congregating. Collaborations. I'm hoping, seeing that I'm leaving the swaying coconuts and dusky maidens of Palau for the 'real' World that I'll make the acquaintance of other RED owners and look at embarking with them on some kind of support deal etc.

Hey best of luck with everything. I'm hoping I'll be back down in Baja sometime within a year or so. If possible it'd be great to hook up.

Cheers,
Mark.

yeah Mark....you said it collaborations! And anytime in BAJA. Always welcome down this way. I've a functional setup with small studio, various cameras and support gear, housings....then on the other side of things scuba, rebreather, O2 boosting, a few boats, bla bla bla. All with the singular vision to capture marine animal behaviour images.

I have a feeling I'll see you in the not to near future. You working with K & G?

Got a full time independent contractors deal with the 'Yellow Squared' boys from Washington so will be working on that. Last trip down that way was in '05 working with Sperm Whales and Humbolt Squid. Had a blast. Beautiful area, marine and land. A bit over fished though.

Now that the questions been raised....hope this is the approriate medium....can i get a quick response as to what my camera number is.....I know it's only been a few hours since posed last night.

I am going this route since I feel red HQ has better things to do than get on the phone with me and find out where my order stands.

my order number is in one of the above posts and i'd just like to know what an eta and camera number i'm at on my second red body.....not pushy here.....so at your leisure....

Saludos

I don't think Red is giving out camera numbers anymore. I think it is understandable that as the volume of cameras and the production increases, it would be a real headache to keep track of specific serial numbers and associate them to orders made six months earlier.

I may be wrong, but after prereservations closed and prior to NAB, if I recall correctly, Jim announced starting at NAB the process would be a a normal ordering method without serial numbers.

Damien

i don't think they can ship cameras without serial numbers that the customer and red can both reference. i think the only thing jim said was that after nab, the camera's serial number does not refer to the reservation number.

Still, it would be really nice to know if I have camera 1982 or 2082...that's the difference between Jan/Feb delivery and a June delivery! There should still be some way for them to tell us, oh you are in the 2100 range, or the 1900 range, or the 2600 range--even a 100 camera range would tell us more. That way when they ship camera they don't have to ship me 2156, they just note what camera serial they shipped me in that range.

:greedy: Hi Damien, while i know red is busy getting cameras out the door, r&d etc....I have to disargee with you. I think red is a business and has a pretty good handle on things. It would be rather strange to know that a compnay such as red could not associate orders to camera serial numbers---it has to be a simple process--order in (date/time)= camera number. I can't in all my wildest dreams imagine that they don't have that together. If they did not, and orders just piled up, how would they then know who gets what camera? basically it's a simple automated process i'm sure....unless they have someone sitting in a room and every time an order comes in from the internet or NAB, IBC etc...and they just throw that into a shoe box to be sorted later?
But....logically they must have everyone commited to other duties with cameras going out and it will take someone to look up each order and then email back said customer with serial number, thus taking up human time.

I could be COMPLETELY wrong, but........:help:

I just thought of one other thing that seems important to me as well.

I ordered at NAB and i got what appears to be camera 1283 or something....and I know when to expect delivery. NOW....I'm back in line as a new customer....AND i have no idea as to what number i am, when to expect delivery or if there are say 5000 cameras additional in the pipeline and maybe i'm a 2009 delivery. It would be nice to know an expected ETA given that cameras are shipping and there is a schedule for the first 2,000 cameras.

It would just seem good customer relations (not a poke at red at all by the way) to let new customers know where they stand. I'm pretty happy knowing where my first camera body and acc's fall on the calendar. But as a new client, I would surely like to have that same information now that things are known.....AND I totally get that things CAN and LIKELY WILL CHANGE according to Jannard.

The deal with "no more serial numbers" is that we started catagorizing camera reservations by time-stamp (date and time of order) not the cameras actual serial number. Along with individual customer ID #'s and order #'s these are all carefully logged and the queue continues as it always did. If you ordered within the last couple weeks you can expect your order to be filled Spring 2008.

Guess that's as much as can be hoped for....
Thanks for the info Sean.
Figured there had to be some automated time stamping way to catogorize for orgination of clients paired to cameras.
