Kind of makes me wish I worked a lot harder on improving my skills in programs like lightwave and maya instead of focusing on pesky things like story and character development.
Apparently this is how directors are getting their big breaks these days.

Even though that's the trend I'm gunning for, it's just that. A trend.

Once enough of these young FX wizzes start losing money and critical acclaim and some other type of wunderkind comes onto the scene there'll be a big push to emulate that persons success.

A good story stands the test of time :)
Now where did I put my Blender manual...

I don't understand how there's a 30 million dollar deal from this. If he was offered a high level FX position on some upcoming movies, I would get that. But there's no story here. Kid plays with robots, real robots show up, blow stuff up and then really blow stuff up. Not saying he doesn't have talent, I'm sure he does. Just curious how this particular video leads to that kind of deal. Good for him for getting it though. I certainly don't have any 30 million dollar deals on the table. I'm envious.

I think you'd have to have a particularly thick hide not to be envious...that, or be Neil Blompkamp. :coolgleamA:

The short did look like an FX reel more than a directorial showcase so I understand your puzzlement/frustration very well.

Maybe studios showed interest after they saw the short and then he amazed them with some of his other work or an amazing script for the feature afterwards. He could be an incredibly talented young director.

All I know is the "Kid gets millions of dollars and his own personal Obi Wan after a youtube video" makes for a better story. The press/the guy's new found talent agents could be behind the romanticised story.

...or maybe he got incredibly lucky in the aftermath of District 9 and we should all be fuming

I can't begrudge the guy for getting off his ass and spending what must have been sleepless nights toiling in front of a computer to craft an epic short rather than moping around, waiting for some Unobtainium camera that's always around the corner.

That's more or a dig on myself than anyone else on these boards to be honest :furious3:

Bottom line is, best of luck to the dude no matter what the real story is and where he'll end up.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe there's more to it than just this video. Maybe that just got the ball rolling.

Absolutely, I give him all the credit in the world for doing this. Much better than sitting on forums. :-)

I wish him well. I do admire people who go out and DO, rather than sit back and talk about it. I was mostly just trying to figure out how that video would land him the deal he got, but maybe there's more to his portfolio that we're not seeing and that got the deal done. Whatever the case, sounds like he's on the road to success.

That video reminded me of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. The guy that directed Sky Captain also made a short about robots attacking a city, then got Hollywood to give him a bunch of money to make a movie.

However, I actually think it is very smart for Hollywood to tap into this guy. He obviously has a skill at visual storytelling and imagery. But more important, as movies now make most of their profit from the foreign box office it makes sense to invest in Hispanic director that can helm a big Hollywood action spectacle (the exact kind of movie that makes a killing over seas). Whatever his first feature is, it will probably do quite well in South America. I know if I was living in South America, I would be damn excited to see someone of my ethnicity directing a big hollywood blockbuster.

Next Neil Blompkamp?
Judging from the video only, it more looks like "the next Roland Emmerich".

Anyway - I won`t believe the 30 mil number - even a non-first timer director like Richard Kelly got a tiny budget of just approx 6 mil for Donnie Darko (as it`s reported) - even Neil himself went several years through a tour de force until he made Disctrict 9 - so I wouldn`t wonder if it was a 3 mil movie bloated to 30 just for marketing reasons.

But ok, then again there was the (train wreck) "Sky Captain" that had a 70 mil budget with a first time director...only, what happened to that guy afterwards?

So in conclusion on the one hand I wonder the same as Eren (theres more behind it than that little article wants to make us believe) and on the other hand I can imagine the studio just wants to cash in on the Youtube hype (anyway, I won`t believe that 30 mil figure, no no no - it`s ridiculous).

All things considered there really is only one thing to say... congratulations Fedealvarez! good job on the short.

To the rest of us... damn wish it was me:) - my pilot didn't have robots in it... it has something else though....

Guys, there's lessons we can all learn here.

Now I'm about to show you the treatment I sent to Lightstorm Entertainment and well...I'm happy to say that James Cameron has signed me up as his new protoge! I have a meeting at 2 with CAA so I can't show you much because...well, I don't want to blow the deal or anything but here you go:

That deal doesn't mean anything until he's actually filming. Until then he's just lucky he got inside "the circle".

Next step is a script and that script needs to be believed.

I'm glad for him that he got a break so far but he's going to have to prove himself over and over again before the film is made.

PS I thought it was very lame from a directorial POW, but he did put it together so there's some points already.
