With the first batch of cameras getting ready to roll out, I'm curious that I haven't seen anything about the warranty. Has RED published an official warranty yet?

Great question....would be great to see the back page on warranty.....for example am i covered for floods in ten feet or less of salt water? i assume fresh water is unlimited depth?

As far as I remember there isn't an official statement yet, but Jim has said that they would look at what was fair. If it was something that they did, then obviously they'll take care of it. If it was your fault, then your out of luck and should talk to your insurance company.

Red Let The Water In Through The Water-tight Compartments?? Ok....sounds Great. Oops! I Thought This Thing Was Bullet Proof?

I bet there's a heat seeking missle clause in there somewhere. :clown2:

Have these thing been dropped yet? I remember Jim saying it was built like a tank. I've never dropped a tank so I'm not sure how much that'll help when the inevitable happens.

I would like to think they're build strong, but still- is it typical to drop a production camera? I've been shooting video for the past ten years and I have not dropped one yet.

I did have my Sony D-30 go down once due to the friction on the tripod leg giving way (Manfrotto is junk) - BTW it survived the 4 foot fall onto hard floor and I was shooting with it one minute later. I now have Cartoni legs rated at 132 pounds with posi-locks that snap firmly in place! I have made my share of mistakes over the years but I rarely repeat them.
I wonder if the R&D guys at Sony take 20 test mules and drop them from various heights during dev?
I expect to get the rap on the warantee on Friday, should be interesting. Ultimately I trust the Madman, it will be reasonable.

I imagine the warranty to be flexible beyond the strictly worded legalise. Jim wants to take care of his people, beyond that which a lawyer will let him commit to

What about international support...? There is limited info on how international warranty and support will be handled; any data will be great.

I proposed a life warranty, for the thirst 1000 red owners, like for the Rolls-Royces. If the red one is build like a tank, it's not a problem.

Hi Guys,
This also brings up interesting thoughts on yet
untested sensor life or has this been
covered elsewhere in an older thread? What
would be the expected life of the sensor and
how long would Red cover it and under what
conditions? Pannie now have a 5 year warrenty for
the HPX 502, it costs about $5K US over and above
the japanese 501,(yikes). Would an extended warrenty be available
for the Red sensor and boards if requested and paid for at
date of purchase. Might be nice for some guys/girls to know this
before cameras go out the door. Especially those outside the US.

I remember Jim telling people to just look at Oakley's warranty record. Anyone ever sent back a pair of Oakley's that were out of warranty? They treat you very well and fix them for a VERY reasonable price.
I assume all repairs, covered by the warranty or caused by 10' 2" of saltwater, will be more than fair.

That's an excellent point. If Oakley's warranty record is any indication of the warranty service RED will offer, then camera owners will be pretty happy. I recall buying a pair of interchangeable Iridium Oakleys in '86? (man, I'm getting old!) that I accidentally stepped on and scratched. I sent them back and had a free pair in the mail within a week. Now that's service!
I'm fairly certain Jim set out on this adventure fueled by passion. I'd be willing to bet that RED's main goal is getting and keeping the best possible camera into filmmakers hands and any resultant profit is icing on the cake. I'd say we're in pretty good hands.
