I get my news from YouTube, unfiltered by "the man." People are saying inflation is 9%, not 3%. Will Jim be forced to raise prices? Will you guys with redsevations drop out if prices go up 9%. Hey, milk and gasoline have gone up way more than 9%. I think 9% is conservative.

Fortunately for most of us, inflation isn't just about gasoline and milk. Also fortunately, most of us do not live in Zimbabwe, where inflation is currently around 7500% and rising.
But eventually, sure, the price of Red will likely go up. Such is life. If you're shooting with Red, charge accordingly. Keep the economic circle turning...

The chance of Red's price going up in the long term is as about as high as a computer or digital camera's price going up. I.E. ZERO.
Yes, Red is a steal and could definitely double (triple? quadruple? sextuple?) in price and be good value. Early reservation holders will definitely be able to sell it for more than its sticker price until demand is met. But electronic innovation hasn't hit a wall yet. This is not a mature technology. CMOS has only been around for a blink of an eye.
Eventually, there will be a Red Two. And the price of Red One will go down.

I don't think RED will go up. But I DO think gas prices affect people MASSIVELY (but I'm in Phoenix where everyone drives everywhere and there's a lot a miles to cover). Gas isn't even in the market basket of goods that inflation is derived from but I think it used to be.
Now the M3 money supply data isn't even published. That's the rate at which dollars are being printed - a key factor in figuring inflation.
The last report was a 17% increase I think. Then Bush stopped publishing it. I think dollars are flooding the market and inflation is actually massive but we're not going to know it for a few years. Bush has been credit card spending from the bank of China on defense and the bill doesn't come due for a few years. Right now the economy is artificially propped up and it's still not very rosy.
Luckily, video as an industry isn't going away.

What a scam! Now that the M3 data isn't published I'm sure they are printing twice as much money as before.

I didn't mean the price of the RED One would go up in the long term. I think you're absolutely right that the RED One's price will go down. I meant the prices of RED's product line in the long term, including the RED Two, Three etc. It's just inflation, and it affects everything. I doubt the price will increase out of step with inflation, like, say, college tuition or something, but I'm sure you'll see it happening.
Not that the higher price won't be worth it, and not that you won't see an appreciable increase in quality either, or a decrease in size, or any number of desirable things, but I'm pretty sure the price increase will happen.

I would say look at Jan 1, 2008 for the price to go up.
It would be a no-brainer business decision. If the camera
shakes out and starts producing incredible results then
I will be hedging some bets and will put in another order.
Since the RED One will be upgradable I would not
envision another gen of camera until sensor technology
takes another leap forward. What I would keep an eye
out for is the competition. You know many of the big guys
are watching and waiting.

Is anyone really concerned with gasoline prices in the US? I mean honestly even a 30 cent change in price equals what $4.50 a month? That's less than a frappuccino.

But the frappuccino now costs more because they have to ship the expresso beans and the ice and the special sauce. Plus the blenders are gas powered.

Yes, gasoline prices influence just about everything. And more so in the US, which is the country with the highest energy consumption per capita in the world. Everything that has to be shipped becomes more expensive, that includes all the Red parts made outside of the Red factory (where is that again  ).
Cheers,
