I was looking around on the net and found this:
128GB external SSD with triple interface.
67 MB/s read / write, .1ms access time (FW800)

It seems to have the data rate transfer speed for 4k. Though $5500, is a bit steep, you could shoot almost 2hrs 4k, and then transfer at night to your hard drives. This might be a very interesting solution for some of us documentary types - especially scuba divers. Any chance RED will offer a version of this?
If not would this work? Or do we need some type of RED proprietary adapter?

It doesn't have eSATA, so couldn't be connected to the RED. Nevertheless, the announcement of the 64GB RED RAM was a while back now. They always said that would change as new SSDs became available. I think 96GB might already have been mentioned. So maybe the 64GB SSDs used in that could be used in the RED RAM by the time it ships.

It's not been updated on the website, but both Ted and Jim have mentioned that it's now 96GB.

doesn't CF seem like a more affordable and smarter option at this point?

Unless you need to be able to make longer than 4 minute takes.
As to 128 GB, that's more like around 1 hour of 4k.
Cheers,

Hey, if the RED RAM is sold at 96gb by November 10, I may get that instead of the RED Drive. The whole possible instability thing of the RED Drive has really given me second thoughts about it. It's just something else I don't want to have to worry about you know?

Glad to here the 96gb. I hope RED announces a ton of stuff, and pricing at IBC. I too would like to be able to shoot 2 hours a day on hot beaches in the Bahamas and then at night off load to computer. Now if 3-4 CF cards can do that - I'm stoked. Changing cards every 8 minutes when I try to do 4-6 minute shots is not what I call fun or effective. Fine on a film set, not fun on the beach or underwater.

Speed, Price, availability and eSATA. That's all we are waiting for.

i'm a bit confused on eSATA ...
does the drive itself have to be eSATA ?
or is it the external housing for the drive that has to be eSATA and that housing can have a SATA drive in it ?

the drive could be sata as no bare drive has an esata connector.
