Is it actually possible to export RED footage to a normal DVD? If so, how do you do it? I have often wondered about this question.

what do you mean export ?
the R3d files itself ? no. there is no dvd player that could straight decode it i reckon.

Definitely doable but can be time consuming depending on your machine and how au fait you are with post workflows.
On Mac with Final Cut etc. you would convert the RED footage using one of the free RED software tools from www.red.com/support (Redcine X, REDAlert, REDRushes) to something like ProRes HQ. I find the best quality for Standard def DVDs comes from converting to ProRes at 1080p then in Compressor, converting this down to a DVD stream - making sure that you turn Frame Controls ON in the Inspector panel and choose Best for the Resize filter. That way you still have HD ProRes onelight files for future editorial and the SD DVD will retain the crispness and colour fidelity.
I'd imagine the process would be much the same on a PC. Using Premiere you could probably skip the R3D conversion step and use the native files inside Premiere - then send to Encore. Probably wouldn't save you much time though because at some point the final debayer still has to take place. A PC-head could speak further to this.
