View Full Version : Dropped RED 18-85MM Zoom - Now out of focus

I had a RED PRO 18-85MM lens shipped from New York to Los Angeles. It was in a custom flight case and professionally packaged by UPS. When it arrived in Los Angeles I was horrified to see that the flight case broke apart from the inside - dislodging the lens in the case. There was NO cosmetic damage to the lens. We took the flight case to the manufacture and the guy who built it said the case had to been drooped with the force of 2-G's for it to do that kind of damage.
We put the lens on the camera and now it will NOT focus properly.
Wondering if this has happened to anybody else and where they took it to get CHECKED OUT or REPAIRED. The lens is under a year old. Does anybody know if RED can help me out? Or any other solutions.
Thanks

The clan Duclos seems an obvious place to start, as well as the REDBunker.

I would echo Karl.
Dr. Duclas should be the first one to see.

Very sorry for your trouble.
If possible can you post pictures of the case damage (inside and out)?
thanks

Go to RED !!! Red lenses are not very repair friendly for second parties.
Dropped quite some $$$ at Abel Cinetech (not their fault) - they could do nothing
and I had to ship it to red anyway.

The Red Primes are supposed to be much easier to repair.
"RPP's have a cellular mechanical design that will accelerate repair time tremendously. 48 hour turn around instead of the normal 2 weeks...."

I think this should be a conclusion for the "second parties" to decide.
I think RED did a good job with keeping their lenses service friendly.
Especially with their PRO series and even more so with their primes.

Matthew,
I know your expertise and I appreciate your opinion but the very able guys at Able Cine Tech in New York said exactly the opposite.
At least when it came to my 18-50mm Red zoom lens.

OK, that started life as a Sigma stills camera lens, there lies the 'problem'. The 18-85 & RPP's are very different.
