Hi,

I wanted to share our new post-apocalyptic ID Video 2010 for the Belgium association "La Film Fabrique (http://www.filmfabrique.net)"

http://www.vimeo.com/8529560

Dir : Daniel Bruylandt - Julien Henry (http://www.julienhenry.com)
Camera : Jeff Kieffer (http://www.jeffkieffer.com) - Oliver Imfeld (http://noproblemproduction.com/) - Felix Sorger (http://www.imdb.de/name/nm1557689/) - Manu Dacosse (http://www.manudacosse.com/)
Costume : Kelig Pinson
Location Manager : Bruno Pons - Mathieu Giraud
Sound design : Ludovic Cesar (http://www.ludoviccesar.com/)
Offline Editing : Martin Leroy
SFX : Daniel Bruylandt

Shot with 2 RED One's, and 1 Canon 5D Mark II.
We had 1 shooting day and the weather was really bad, so all the sky's were replaced in post.

Some very nice behind the scenes impressions from Jeremie Ducrocq (http://www.flickr.com/photos/neverneverlight/sets/72157622712046233/).

Share the love,

Jeff

Nice work- the grading really adds to the production value. I'd love to see a before and after example and hear a little about the process involved if possible.

The last part there with the tv noise.. Was the stock from video co pilots products. Just curious. haha I recently used some of the same footage if it is.

Brilliant video by the way, really enjoyed it...

So here we go,
I had to torture the SFX guy only lightly :violent5: and that's what he said:

"The rushes (RED and 5D) were converted to Apple ProRes for the offline edit, which was done in FCP. Then, like always (through Crimson and RedCine) the rendered DPX’s were imported in AE CS4.

First off, everything was done in AE CS4.
DPX 2K for the RED stuff and Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) for the 5D stuff.

No need to say, that grading the RED rushes, revealed a huge margin of possibilities and with the 5D, the limits of the codec showed up really fast!

But in the mix, both matched pretty good.

The main idea was to contrast the images a lot, to give a ‘silhouette’ feel to the characters whenever possible. This was achieved by mainly playing with the curves and by desaturating.

The sky’s were replaced in every shot (tracked, sometimes the ones with hack zooms or movement's or out of focus were tracked manually).
As the original sky’s were all grayish, it was really easy to replace them with the new ones through a “Multiply” transparency.

The titles were also tracked. A combination of animation presets was used and a 3D light was applied to give some volume. A Wiggle expression was applied to add some random shines.

The noise in the TV was animated through a combination of different ‘Bad TV’ effects. The light coming from the TV also had a Wiggle expression added.

Hope this helps,
Dan Bruylandt"

I added a couple of ungraded stills to give an idea of the RAW footage.

Yep, it was kind of a similar idea, different situation, different means ;)

It's tough to find an idea in this world that someone else didn't also have. It's the execution that defines the quality of a creative work.

Man those skies in the original/ungraded footage are PERFECT to replace! And the foreground is relatively dark too... it sucks trying to sky-replace for the most part... but looks like it would have been fun here!
