Am I the only one who feels 3D is a supply side driven idea? Something people never demanded but the producers decided we should all consume so as to buy more expensive movie tickets, LCD screens and more?

Definitely pushed by the supply side but I think consumers have shown an interest and if we're going to have Avatar quality 3D moving forward I think it will be huge business. However, Im not totally convinced 3D in the home is going to have the same consumer impact as 3D in the theatre.

Now I'm not Avatar bashing, people obviously enjoy it. But for how long? Personally, and anecdotally others have said this too, you forget you're watching 3D. After an hour into it, it feels like any other movie except i'm uncomfortably wearing glasses. Only when the 3d does something wild (i.e. 'flies' out at you) do you how 'oh yeah, 3D!', which by it's very nature is a gimic.
I'm not forcasting 3d as all hype or a fad, i think it's here to stay, but only a niche of what these corporations want. They want everything to be 3d so they can sell us more shit. Certain things should be 3D. Transformers 3D with giant robots and Megan Fox's breast looming at you? Hell yes! But "The Hobbit" in 3d? Please no. So much is sacrificed in the art to make it 3d.

Nice one craig. :)
What Avatar showed was that 3D was a legitimate tool to enhance the art of filmmaking. It's a good thing that you aren't constantly 'aware' and thinking about the fact that it is 3d.

I think a billion dollars in Avatar ticket sales in 17 days shows there is demand. :001_tongue:

A better dig would have been silent/talkie.
But hey, you didnt need to wear anything to go from B&W silent to color talkies :coolgleamA:
It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

There are quite a few other 3D news there...3D enabled laptops being some of them. Acer has an interesting cheap 3D laptop with passive polarized glasses solution which are very eye friendly and looks pretty cool if you don't mind the loss of resolution (and restriction of movement). If they eventually increase the resolution this solution will be great for longer lasting 3D experience.
I'm kind of skeptical for these first 3D screens dependent on active shutter glasses. It looks like it will be 120Hz shutter standard at first stage. That is not enough, with 60+60 Hz per eye you still feel something slightly unpleasant in front of your eyes. You get used to it and forget about it but it's definitely NOT longer, home 3D experience friendly.
240 Hz (120Hz x2) shutter should be the lowest home standard, IMO.
480 Hz announced by Vizio seems like a marketing numbers crap. Maybe I'm wrong and they won't just take the 480Hz panel from "other manufacturer" and XpanD will actually release active shutter glasses @ 480 Hz ...but that seems like far fetched and I think 480 Hz will be used only to reduce blur on LCD technology.

I thought about using "The Jazz Singer" - But I didn't think it actually pans out that way - Silent movies to talkies are a MUCH bigger step than 3D to 2D for the audience. Sound is 50% or more of the experience of modern movie going.
As for needing to wear glasses to see 3D, I like many people needed to wear glasses just to see period - then I got contacts. I need to wear sunglasses when it's too sunny outside. Needing to wear glasses isn't weird to me. I'm hoping it pans out in a way that exhibition standards come into place so you don't have to wear the theatres crappy, uncomfortable glasses - I'm willing for that slight extra layer of technology for a new experience.
It's also worth commenting some of my favourite movies are black and white silent films.

Well I think I wouldn't have enjoyed Avatar any less if I had watched it in 2D. Probably more, because there would have been less glasses, headache and watering eyes.
So I do not really get into that hype about movies being 3D... maybe I'm 31 and oldfashioned already... where is that mini-disc...

That Panasonic camera makes me happy, cause it makes 3D accessible to independent filmmakers.

I was a little disappointed that 3D for the most part is going to be with Active Shutter. I find Circular Passive is better for Stereoscopic Displays. I hope the manufactures aren't going to say in couple of years that Passive is next, then Auto-Stereoscope? On the other hand I am glad that there is more of a Standard with Stereoscopic 3D, just give me Avatar as close as possible to the way I saw it in theaters.

JVC is going with circular polarizing.

Joseph, from the various prototypes I've seen, shutter can be very good visually ... but not with current LCDs. Plasmas are faster, and henceforth much better suited. Even better are OLED-TVs, but that will take some time to be available. The problem with virtually all polarised 3d screens is that you lose half the vertical resulution.
