Also strange that the 18-50 is not present in the Red online store... What's up with that?

Oddly familiar looking.

$1000 cheaper than the Red Version. Probably a 'garage' clear out, I can't think they have been selling well recently.

The RED 18-50 is still in the store, it is just not on the home page. Hit the Lenses button.

Peter Plevritis

Maybe Red could drop it to $4K. I've wanted one of these for a while.

but wait...

Check out the shipping cost. Ground, $800 to CA. Didn't know these where made on the moon.

WOAH! Anyone know why the shipping costs are so high?

Matt Uhry
01-09-2010, 01:13 PM
Interesting, but shipping cost is bizzare: FedEx Priority will run you $4,891.20.

I think it looks like the focus scale has a bit more rotation than the Red 18-50 ... Can a 18-50 owner have a look and compare ?

Not a very good way for B&H to make friends at Red if they want to sell some Scarlets.

Definitely looks like Red made a deal to blow out some lenses. Makes sense since the 18-85 covers the range and it is closer to the styling of the primes.

Mathias Erichsen
01-09-2010, 02:24 PM
He, he! There must be something wrong with the B&H shipping-price... FedEx Priority is $11,079.00 to Norway! :/

Maybe who ever Red made a deal to make this lens also made an agreement that Red would have exclusive sales for a period of time. And maybe that has ended.

DigiOptical? Who's that?

Jeff Kilgroe
01-09-2010, 03:09 PM
It's identical to the RED 18-50, including all the marks, scales, labeling (/i), etc.. Just says DigiOptical instead of RED on it.

Something is definitely funny about this... And not just the shipping rates. My first impression was that it could be a Chinese knock-off, but they probably wouldn't be stamping "/i" on it if it were... Peter could be right that an exclusive contract may have ended.

That price is in pounds. And, when you pay thousands in shipping it's not such a good deal anymore either :)

....so it's more like Red still has an interest in the manufacture of these lenses and are selling their seconds, surplus etc, as non-branded.

Steve Gal

So I think Red is gonna take this lens and the 50-150 and rebrand them and sell them through Retail stores. I believe it was stated that Red does not want to make lenses anymore less than the quality of the Pro Primes. Just my guess.

Phil Jordan
01-09-2010, 05:25 PM
My guess is that the exclusive period is up with Cooke on these lenses since it has been two years and Cooke is doing this with B&H. The 18-50 and 50-150 seem to be the only ones Red didn't develop themselves and they aren't called pro which I hope means Red will have a new pro version they come out with soon. Red does a better price/performance lens than anyone including the pro 18-85 and the RPPs.

Phil Jordan

I just noticed that Red took down Cooke from the gear we use page.

Well, last time Jarred answered "heh heh heh", the eBay distributor of fake RED stickers was forced to "re-focus" his business a bit.

Having said that, I have NFI what's up with those lenses. LOL

New zoom? Maybe they redesigned the 18-50 so the old design went elsewhere.

Pro version on the way?

Peter Plevritis
01-09-2010, 07:14 PM
...implying Red may be making a Pro version of this lens and it'll be even cheaper, I can tell by the silhouette.

Roberto Lequeux
01-09-2010, 07:16 PM
Hahaha!! Nice! Guess the 18-50mm Pro is on the way.

Probably with a similar price, though greatly improved in every way. Doubt the price will drop.

Way to get the glassaholics stirred up, Jarred!

Looking at the silhouette...it looks VERY similar to the current 18-50. Maybe slightly fatter in the middle. So the question is...is this a completely new lens, a Pro-ified version of the current one, or just a stylized photo of the current one to mess with our heads?

One of your guesses is correct. I would probably put money on it not being the last two.

LMAO

OK Jarred, so would you put your bet on that it is an entirely brand spanking new design of a new short compact zoom to join the Pro line of RED-designed lenses?

Would it be risky to say that it will be released in 3 month's time?

So it seems that RED has relinquished their manufacturing contract in favor of their own new "much more better" short zoom.

Lovely.

You sly dog, you.

I'm curious to see what you've come up with. I have to wonder though, how can a new Pro zoom be the same size (or so it appears) as the old 18-50, when the 18-85 is so large?

I'm know we'll hear all the details when the time is right. But curiosity has been contracted, and the incubation period is short.

OK, I'm officially confused. That lens for sale thru B&H is mighty fishy...

Anyway, love the shot of the new lens. Please let this be a new zoom. Something like a 15-40 T2.4. Please? :)

Hmmm... I had assumed Snappy was shot with the new 18mm RPP. Oops, my bad.

And the ISO 4000 shot too? OK, Jim did say "RED Pro zoom at T2.8". I guess I just ASSumed the 18-85.
