I'm dating myself here but back in the day when I first started in this business I was a cameraman for NBC news. The main camera that we were using (this was just after the film days) was an RCA TK76A. It was an American made camera. You can see me holding it on the deck of the John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier in 1982 just off the coast of Lebanon (I was the bureau cameraman in Beirut in the early 80's) in the attached foto. I'm 3rd from the left on the bottom row. That camera was a boat anchor even then but it was cutting edge technology until Sony and Ikegami took over the market shortly after (Man I loved those Ikegami cameras).
That was 25 years ago. And finally an American company jumps back in...with the latest technology. I have nothing against products from other countries, but it is great to see an American company back in the pro camera business. BTW, I have a TK76A camera on my bookshelf now. I bought it on Ebay. About $125. When new it was around $50,000!

Yeah, not to get all anti globilization or anything but it is really great to know that this camera was designed and built here. That my money is being spent on an amazing camera made by people I like and respect and my dough stays in the US economy too boot. It's a beautiful thing.
P.S. that camera is AWESOME. It looks like a portable refriderator

Lets here it for made in america. This year at NAB the big splash was made by Dalsa, Red, and Silicon Imaging (in alphabetical order). I believe Dalsa is canadian, but lets here it for the continent!

that is an awesome picture,
I got into the business just as the TK was going out, with a few guys still
using them. Man talk about having to light up a joint. there was no such
thing as one man band with those cameras!

Great picture anyway!!!
But for the RED ONE should be written:
Designed by RED in California.
and probably
Made in USA??!!
Or??!!

As a camera you overpaid, as an heirloom priceless!
BTW, When new it was around $50,000!
According to the westegg inflation calculator
What cost $50000 in 1979 would cost $149,278.09 in 2006
Also, if you were to buy exactly the same products in 2006 and 1979,
they would cost you $17500 (RED today) and $5861.54 respectively.

Man talk about having to light up a joint.
You're not kidding! It actually took pretty good pictures in really bright sunshine. That was about it though! The viewfinder was almost unusable. Ergonomically it was awful. When used on the shoulder, the tripod plate would wound you. And it was huge. I was always afraid some militant would mistake it for a rocket launcher. So I put a huge sticker of Donald Duck on the side. Try to humour the natives!

but don't forget that people from elsewhere worked on it, too. Think about Graeme and Rob Lohman, the first real world test in NZ, think about the input from all over the world...
P.S.: And let's definately not forget Stewart from Hon Kong

Something tells me 95% of the actual "making" of the camera didn't happen in the US of A.

Hahaha Priyesh, no one can forget our wordsmith of the far east...
I would say though that the overall design lends itself to a very respectful nod to Arri/Aaton with a mix of good old American Perspicacity for the image maker...

panavision has no 2k digital camera yet. the genesis is 1080p.
and, afaik, the genesis is mainly designed by sony.
the first 35mm 2k and up was, iirc, the Arri D20.
the first widely used digital cinematography camera was the sony 900, starting back in 1999. 1080p as well.

Andrew, Stewart is reduser's personal Yoda, don't forget it!
- he spoketh in wise tongues... :-D
Best regards, Priyesh
P.S.: BTW, I'm just happy about this project coming true.
But to be honest, I think nowadays something like this could only be made in the U.S.

Me too Priyesh, I am not only really happy about this project-- which is giving me an opportunity to own when there was none that would fit the bill... but all the like minded- very intelligent filmmakers that I have been able to meet through this forum. I plan on meeting many at LART (another amazing opportunity) and many more in 2008 in person... These are the great days...
Cheers Priyesh and have a great weekend my friend,
Andrew
