View Full Version : Timebase change requires re-format

Why on earth does changing the timebase (from 24 to 25 fps for example) require the media to be re-formatted????

Surely the drive is simply formatted as FAT32.
And the R3D files are individual files.

This is getting to be a major annoyance.
If I am filming for one project which needs 24fps and happen to see something which would be useful for another project (at 25fps), then I have 2 options:
1. re-format the drive and lose the footage whichI have just taken.
2. record the new footage at the wrong frame rate

3. Get a second drive or use CF cards... :embarassed:

If shooting without sound, shoot varispeed and change the framerate flag in post.

for most people this is a good thing. most people shoot only one project at a time, and changing timebase withing a project would be rare and probably be a mistake. so it keeps you out of trouble. and as people say, just carry two pieces of media- one for one project one for the other- surely that would be helpful in organizing later?
i realize some people (antony) don't do it the "normal" way, and of course, what works for you is of course fine. But I am guessing dont wait for this element to change soon. It may have something to do with playback in camera. Lowly HVX200 will let you record multiple timebases on a card but wont play clips recorded in another timebase than you are currently in.
