Just so you know, I am here at 1:09am with the RED team personally reviewing each camera of the 1st 25. We are calibrating each camera and my job is to check the files in RED Alert! that Jarred is shooting. We are shooting ISO 320, 1000 and 2000. There are about 20 people here getting ready for tomorrow. It really is a memorable night. About a year and a half ago this was just a dream. Tonight the dream has become a reality.

I want to thank all those that believed in RED from the beginning.

I'm not even getting a camera today, but my eyes are wet! It's really amazing you made this deadline! Congratulations!

EDIT - I've believed in you since the first time I heard of Red. I'm just sorry it wasn't in 2006.

Heh Jim, thank you for the many opportunities that are happening for me now and I am way down the line at #557. Just the thought of my getting this camera and all that you offer on pl mount lenses has already really pissed off some well established dinosaurs in my area! It seems I am not a dumbass for believing afterall...Thank you for that!!

Big thanks to all the RED Team!!!

Congratulations! Must be a great night!

When you first announced this camera and everyone was screaming that it was impossible and making fun of the notion... my only thought was... "Yes, that's exactly the camera I want to buy, the one that is considered too good to be true!" Literally the minute you said you were accepting orders, I phoned in. Glad I woke up early that morning!

Wish my RED were among the first 25, but nevertheless, indeed, it's not only your dream, but also a dream of ours that is coming true.

If anybody told only some years ago, that there will soon be a digital cinema camera with 4K resolution, footages can be edited in your home computer, and all this comes with a reasonable price, it would have sounded like extended wishful thinking. And, today, all this is happening! Next it will be our turn to realize our dreams.

Congratulations for all of you in the RED team!

Thankyou Jim.. I remember first hearing about the RED project in early 2006 thinking it was nothing more than lofty vapour-ware. Nearly 2 years ago now I remember Googling up the magical words "4k digital camera" and up came a link in a Wikipedia page to red.com and its been a wild ride down the rabbit hole since.

Can't tell you how proud I am to be part of Red. I still remember hearing about the Red Camera way back in 2006, even though most thought that it was vaporware back then, deep down in me, I still hope that it's a real thing.

Thanks for letting us being a part of this journey, I look forward in hanging around here for more inputs and advice when my red is here.

At the risk of repeating others, Contratulations!

I'm another one of those early believers who didn't hear about RED in time to reserve before NAB 2007, (I didn't have any money during that day in January) but I still feel like part of a very elite (and smart) group of individuals who believed in this project before its release.

Next week it will be easy to say "RED One is the greatest camera in the world" because it will have been proven. But all of us who have been saying it for months and years can now show that proof to everyone who said "You're crazy to reserve one of those, If it was possible to make a 4K camera for $17500, Sony or Panasonic would have done it a long time ago."

RED Fanboy's will never again be thought of as Crazy!!!!

Thankyou Jim and the RED Team

The moment we've all been waiting for is finally here. I remember over at DVinfo.net when the first rumors of the Mysterium chip surfaced, how everyone (myself included) believed it was a hoax. I mean, really, we had just barely begun to explore the world of 720p!!! But then, slowly, the RED team began assembling before our eyes, and the hoax became a vision. Jim,

You’re welcome to the support and confidence, and thank you. Back in April of 2006 my partner, Bart Harrison, and I were at the AJA booth at NAB looking for Ted Schilowitz. They said he had left to go to work at some start-up company called Red. When we got there Bart recognized the team you had assembled and told me “if these guys are here now, there’s something big going on.” That was an understatement. Since Bart is borderline genius with all things digital I pulled out my credit card. It’s been hard to work with my Cine Alta ever since. I remember almost 30 years ago trying to tweek the registration on a 3 tube video camera and thinking someday someone is going to invent a flat image sensor the size of a 35mm film frame and an electronic camera that doesn’t use film and doesn’t have to be tweeked for half an hour before it can be used. What took you so long!?

Congratulations on a remarkable journey, a fantastic product and a business (and perhaps life) philosophy that should be adopted the world over.

Huge congratulations to the RED Team and, obviously, special thanks to Jim for making the self-professed "dream" a reality. I have never known of a business enterprise like this in my life. To me, it seems even more revolutionary than the camera (if that's possible).

I followed the development silently since the very beginning on DVXUser and became more and more impressed with the venture the more I read from Jim. As exciting as it was, though, I never thought I would have the means to own the camera . . . until I received an inheritance a few months ago that actually made it possible.

I feel a mission and an urgency to honor both my benefactor and the tremendous opportunity that the RED team have made possible for me by making at least one very, very fine film with this camera. I will not settle for less than that.

Congrats to everyone at RED and the owners of 1-25. It'll be fun to hear all the ups and downs. I've got a feeling you guys will be inventing the workflows the rest of us adopt.

Jim

Wow. Day 1. This has been such an exciting journey to watch. I've been following this since the first posts on DVXUser, sharing with many skeptical friends, dragging two up to the LA screeenings, always amazed at the old-time entrepeurial spirit of Jim Jannard and team. To think that the head of the company was there this morning at 1 AM doing what many CEOs would consider grunt work..

Well, you've done it. Congratulations.

My one hope through all of this is that this journey has been well documented, because it will make an amazing documentary one day. Save all the footage, all the photos, every last scrap of info. I look forward to seeing that.

And I look forward even more to our little production company shooting our third feature on the RED 1.

Thanks to Jim, Jarred, Anders, Graeme, Brook, Evin, Sean and the entire RED team, Mike Curtis over at HDForIndies, and the RED supporting community.

Wow - it must feel like watching your only daughter walk down the aisle...

It's been an incredible honor for me (and perhaps for all of us collectively), to have been able to witness all of this unfold and even participate in our own way. I remember visiting red.com right after it was bandied about the Web, and thinking "could this really be?", and then finding out that Jim was behind it. That, for me, made all of the difference, as Oakley has been a brand I'd grown to trust implicitly. Had a real hard look at finances that night, and my has time flown. From NAB 2006 to the parties at Sundance & Caesars' and watching 4k CTL in the booth this year, seeing the maniacal passion and dedication manifest itself in everything you all have done. What a ride, what a frikkin ride this has been!

I am a big reader, not much of a writer. I have visited this site at least 5 times a day since its inception to follow the journey. I just want to thank Red, the Team, and the many participators who have made this forumn the best read of the decade. There has been adventure, inspiration, obstacles to overcome, twists and turns, solutions, planning for the future, and all have made me feel truly on the inside of the whole fascinating process. Thank you RED, and here is to all of your successes!!!

I want to congratulate Jim and the Red Team for dreaming big and delivering on that vision. Having followed the development of this camera from the start, the Red Team has never failed to impress me with their creativity, energy and ambition.

In a post not too long ago about high-ISO, Jim jokingly referred to the willingness of the Red Team to take bold creative chances as working in an environment that has no "adult supervision." Needless to say, even the best of visions don't move an inch closer to reality in the absence of disciplined hard work and judicious execution. And the fact that Red Team, as small as it is, has done so much in such a short period of time, speaks volumes about the work ethic and dedication of each member of this enterprise.

The word "revolutionary" has come up countless times in connection to what the Red Team was producing. I don't disagree with this description. But whenever I thought about what Red as a company has been doing, I always thought of what economist Joseph Schumpeter called "creative destruction." While the Red Team was mostly concerned about creating a solid product at an affordable price, in my opinion, what they ended up doing has transformed in a major way important aspects of product development in the motion picture camera industry.

I realize that many books and countless articles will be written in the future attempting to understand and explain what the Red Team has done. But as one who has closely followed what the Red Team has been doing, the development process of the Red One is one of those few situations where I can say I was around at the "moment of creation" because of the extraordinary openness and accessibility of the Red Team.

Red Team, thank you for creating an exciting product and making it affordable to a sizable segment of the population--at least in the Western world. And thank you for doing it with as much openness and humility as you did.

Mike

Not only has RED has been a remarkable, transparent and very public online development of a cutting edge product, it also promises to redefine technical and creative standards of motion picture imaging.

Perhaps this is an historic moment of industrial design?

Recently I sold my entire HVX setup in order to go more pro. I am not in the rental business. Naturally, coming from Panasonic dvx100b & Hvx200 (I love the cine look of their cams), I seek out the upper echelon of the Panasonic 2/3 " ENG P2 offerings. So, there are 3 contenders, the HPX 500 , HPX 2000 and the HPX 3000. I called the nearest dealer and had an appointment to go demo the HPX 500 in person.

So the dealer had both cameras(hvx and hpx) hooked up to a giant wall plasma and we began to shoot and compare footage.

---Excerpt ---

me: Hmmm... yeah the 500 footage does look a little sharper on the plasma screen vs the hvx.

sales: Yeah, it does, doesn't it? plus its a big pro 2/3" cam just like the ones used by the pros.

me: Yeah, its not really dramatically sharper though. Whats the resolution of the censor in this guy ?

sales: Hmmm, lets see ... oh Panasonic doesnt provide that info ..... hmmm oh yeah, it says here it should have 20% - 30% more resolution vs the hvx 200. Yeah, but if you look hard, u will notice its bit sharper plus a bit more dynamic and latitude. If you want sharper image, the 2000 has more resolution BUT it doesn't have variable frame rates.

me: Oh really ? how much is the 2000 ?

sales: Around $27k without Lens. Around $40k, handsomely equipped. You can also buy the extra circuit board, for it to do the new Intra codec.

me: Wow, that is almost the price of the varicam but yet it cant do variable frame rates at all. Cant afford that right now. Just curious, at that price does the 2000 do 1080p ?

sales: No, no 1080p, its still 1080i. Hah, there is also the 3000, now that baby rocks !! It has a full resolution sensor !! We talking about 10bit 1920x1080 here with variable framerate. I reckon this is the varicam p2 replacement. We still havent got the price yet, but its going to be expensive with all those features.

me: Ummm .. ok, well lets see how shallow the DOF we can get with the 500....... Hmmm ... doesnt seems like the DOF is any significant vs the HVX.

sales: Of course not, its only 2/3"you know, its not 35mm. But i tell you want, move back 8ft' - 10 ft' and you can get a sorta 16mm shallow DOF.

me: Yeah but sometime sin tight interior space, theres hardly any room to move. Hmmmm .. I think I maybe able to use a 35mm on this guy right ??

sales: Yeah I think so too but we don't sell 35mm adapter, check on the internet ... i think its called Redrock M2. They are out of Texas.

me: Yeah I have the m2 to use with my hvx, but l how would the m2 will attach to the 500? ... It's ok, i am sure i would find out the answer on the internet tonight. So are you guys are going to bring in the 2000 demo any time soon ?

sales: Ummm.. no, only certain dealer level would be able to sell the series 2000 and above cameras.

So, I thanked the nice sales guy and bid him goodbye. After my headache subsides a little bit from all the different configurations and options, I scoured the net and found a guy using the m2 35mm adapter with the 500. (caution: not for the faint of heart).

"To the owner of this cam, I am not knocking your cam, in fact i admired your persistency and creativity. But that setup scares me and I would pray for your camera.

Then, I decided to do more research on the RED ONE. All I know at that time was, The owner of RED was the owner of OAKLEY and seems to have sold OAKLEY off. I can still remember those days of saving up to own one of his revolutionary "Thermonuclear Protection" oakley Frogskin.

So, what a huge transition from sunglasses to a digital camera, I said to myself, is this RED going to amterialized ? After a quick wiki on "Jim Jannard" it seems like he is really into photography and owns one of world's Canon EF 1200 mm lens ( only 10 of this lens exists in the world today).

Immediately I know the man means business. So, after weighting everything (it was a rather really quick decision actually), the handicapped and crippled $22k HPX500 with canon eng lens or the ReD ONE.

That same night, a deposit was secured for a RED ONE. An educated estimate points to shipping date of early in spring 2008.

So, Jim...

1) Thank you for not crippling the RED ONE. Majority of the big legacy guys in the industry are notorious for crippling their products in order to force consumers to pay more for functionality that is already possible on the product. From Canon DSLR to the Panasonic and Song 2/3" cams.

What? extra $500 just to enable PAL feature in a $9k XL H1 ?? What ? extra $13k to get extra Intra codec and additional resolution on the hpx 2000? What ? extra $30k to get full 1080p ?? What? letter boxing to get 16x9 ?? what ? pixel left, right shifting ?? $#@%#$#^@#@$#@$#

2) Thank you for not only making the RED ONE REVOLUTIONARY but also EVOLUTIONARY with constant updates and upgrades via software. NO more ebaying Dvx100, Dvx100a, Dvx100b ...... Dvx100z.

3)Thank You for selling us a camera that is worth 4-5 times its value at such an outstanding price.

4) Thank You for starting this REVOLUTION. I have absolutely no doubt the RED ONE and JIM JANNARD will go down in history as one of the greatest indie camera advancement ever. Just like how the Panasonic DVX100 did to the indie filmmaker community a few years ago.

I am truly privillaged to be "the children of the Revolution".

p/s: You can be assured that I will not missed the first batch 'preorder-es' of that new "RED Pocket Cam".

Very well said indeed.

BTW, I saw that rig before on one of the HPX500 forums. I give that guy a lot of credit. A 35mm adapter for the 2/3" cameras go for about $27K alone. So it is no surprise that some try to improvise.
