I love how Graeme doesn't know how the optical illusion works, but he can solve RED problems, coding and other stuff. To me that is more difficult than relaxing my eyes, lol...

Cheers! Quite simple. I took an algorithm which creates half-tone screens for offset printers and fed it a VERY low contrast image (of the text) so that the text would be near unintelligible without visually fusing the halftone dots.
Or to put differently, Its a regular halftone screen with the dots for black and white being very close in size (as opposed to small for white and large for black).
So.. Yes the dots have very slight variations in size to create the overall illusion (from afar.. or squinting).

I thought its obvious from first look, but it isn't. Ok now you now - different sizes of dots in right place like in autotypic raster - Georg Meisenbach in 1881 - (different than stochastic raster)

I'm on a 30" display - 2560x1600 - For some reason my eyes aren't cooperating very well today. I have to stand on the other side of the freakin' room to see the illusion. Still cool though.

As far as I can tell wherever the lettering is the dots are slightly smaller. Hence out of focus eyes = darker.
Neat! (I need one of those little award .gif's for my "neat" seal of approval ;)
