I thought I'd revive the first RED THREAD on DVXuser, from way back in December 2005. http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=39951
And this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=42902 is from before Graeme worked his magic.

I love how the people that thought it was a scam now have reservations....muahahah!

This is great ocular. Thanks for reposting this stroll down memory lane. I saw it all in faded colors. Way back in the time of the HVX200 when we were all wearing bell bottoms and sporting lambchops, afros and a fu-man-chu...AN IDEA WAS BORN.....

"The Kinetta is real." ...no disrespect intended...
What is real? I mean think about it.. Maybe Stewart can chime in.

Of course we all thought it was a scam! Heck, it sounds like a scam NOW, and we've already seen footage and stills and prototypes in action. RED is simply too good to be true. And yet, it is true.
Fun reading that thread!

Hey now!
Lets not knock the HVX200. Its a good little camera. We have made some clients really happy with it. Add a 35mm adapter, plenty of proper lighting and... It's not ideal for every job we do, and neither is the Varicam or 35mm film etc. Thats why we reserved. But what else would we have been shooting with?
We are looking forward to our shipments this December. Hopefully everything will live up to our expectations.
It is interesting however, to see what people thought way back, but that was then.
Cheers,
G

I agree, I rag on the HVX on half my posts, yet it's BECAUSE of the HVX and the work I've done with it (and still do) I can afford the RED. It provides the best key of any camera in that price range (and a few strata higher) and showed us how a data-centric workflow would go.
As this is a thread about showing our early opinions of RED, I make no apologies to my opinion based on the information available. The feature list read like science-fiction to me and many others.
We've went from healthy skeptics, to supporters, to (as of today) OWNERS of this bit of Sci-Fi tech.

Hey, I am down w/ the HVX... but I made all my RED money since DEC 06 on a (gasp) 9 yr old canon xl1 and a borrowed dvx100a... (the horrors as forum members shake their heads--lol)

LOL. Who is Mr. Blonde? Avatar looks familiar.
When I first heard about Red, I didn't think it was a scam, but it did seem a little weird people from Oakley glasses would be building the next gen camera.

Yep, I do have a buyer lined up for my HVX. Now if I could sell my G4????

It's amusing to read these old comments from the ney sayers seeing where we are now.
"If a camera had all of that stuff in reality it'd probably be near ATLEAST $200,000.
As I kept reading the specs, I started to laugh louder and louder. There's no way it's real. And if it is then I wonder what the hell they plan on doing to sell it to us."

I remember the day the Red website opened up. It sounded great! My friends and I told our film teacher about it and he kind of laughed at us. Now who's laughing? :bleh:

There was a similar thread on the MacRumors's forums back then when the original iPod was released... Everybody was ditching it as too expensive and nobody would want such a thing... hehehe, now look what happened after!
It's a good thing we're living in a free society, where inovators aren't required to seek public permissions in order to build products! Otherwise, we would still be stuck in the middle age or something...

I think that so many people in the beginning thought it was a scam and that the camera would end in the 6 figures range is one of the biggest compliments to the RED team. The fact that all of us saw a leap that huge as "impossible" or "insanely expensive" gives a glimpse at how big this is. And the fact that a lot of the posters are now regulars in this forum with reservations shows the original comments were merely written in disbelief for how good this camera would be (and now is! congrats to first 25!).

Agreed... I have a love/hate relationship with the HVX. I think it's a complete POS, but the clients love the image it produces. I've made a boatload of money (small boat, anyway) with my HVX and it's the vehicle I used to make my RED purchase a reality.

At least you saw the light. I know my initial guess was that it would be $100k+. Then I saw Jim posting about how he wanted average guys to be able to buy it and I revised my guess to $15k and got on board.
I STILL have people calling me and asking if my vaperware camera has shown up yet. It'll be here pretty soon... hehehe.

In first RED THREAD I wrote: "Keep smiling tuned another 20 years :-)"
It's good - only remove "0" from "20" :-)
I was sceptic too. And now - less than 2 years from mysterious announcement it's funny to read this old thread. Thanks.

Thank goodness I believed in it as soon as I heard of it. It felt so great and special like beyond anything ever. I simply chose to believe it.
There was one person at DVXuser who still wouldn't believe in it two months ago or so.

We would like to see a side by side shoot with a RED and HVX200.
I know Evin has an HVX200 -

Good idea, this would be nice. Same frame, same lighting...

The HVX was a great introduction to HD shooting. I learned about the metadata workflow, HD focusing (what a lesson), Low Light shooting, 35mm adaptors, etc. It also provided me with my biggest TV spots to date (broadcasted internationaly). After shooting a medium lengh (40 min) film with it, I'm pretty confident of a jump to Red and its workflow.
I'm seriously considering an order... Waiting for the footage of users...
Maybe in the next few days, i'll take the plunge...?...
