I'm curious about the size of the Red lenses. Around what weight is the 300mm 2.8? And what diameter front are you hoping for? and is the 18-85mm zoom being designed as a lightweight zoom, possibly weighing in at under 7 pounds?

The goal is to keep the 18-85mm under 7lbs. Like the rest of this project, specifications are subject to change. We do not know the front element diameter.

I do not know the weight or front element diameter of the 300mm, but something tells me that the information is out there... whether official or not. Since there are pictures of the lens, one could interpolate.

The word "compact" has been used by the RED team in describing the size of the RED 18-85mm zoom. I believe they intend to make the lens smaller and lighter than most other S35mm zooms.

The 300mm prime will most likely be the average length/weight for a 300mm prime.

No front element specs, or other exact specs for that matter, have been released or finalized.

cool, thanks for the info. I'm excited to hear that the zoom has intentions to be on the lighter size. I figured it as much, but looked around and didnt see lighweight in correlation to the zoom anywhere. I happen to be just as excited about these lenses as I am about the camera.

If your planning out your matte box, I think you are going to need either 138mm circular or 6.6 x 6.6 filters. Unless the lens uses internal filters.

A lens like this will not have internal NDs.

Hi Brook,

I didn't mean just neutral density filters like what is used on a filter wheel in some video cameras, but removable filter holders. This is fairly common on long focal length lenses.
I bet you dollars to donuts that is what the gray piece at the back of the Red 300 lens is.

Ah, sorry, we were on different pages.

I've worked with a PL mount cannon 300mm that does actually have a slide in spot for filters on the rear of the lens. It comes with a clear glass in it when you are not using ND's. The lens will not focus properly without a piece of glass in that position. Its the only 300 I know like that though.

I don't believe that Nikkon is a cine lens?

I'll Re-phrase Its the only 300mm cine PL mount lens I know of like that.

I was misinterpreting his "internal filters" comment. I thought he was referring to those internal lenses in consumer grade cameras that have a little "ND" switch on the side. I know some people who think that's just how it's done...

So yeah, we weren't on the same page.
