So - is Red's Super Focus Assist enabled?
Let's here the details?
How does it work, etc?
This was the secret I've been waiting to hear about!

Not yet.
We showed a mock up at NAB - see old threads on it.

I don't believe it.
The camera's out and still the cryptic answers.....sigh!

Was meant to be an efficient answer in that there is little point me saying anything other than that has already been said :-)

Actually I'm pretty sure there was no information about it from NAB. I know we *wanted* to see it at NAB but it was MIA. What was "already said" was incredibly cryptic.
Perhaps you can find one of these threads with real information on it?

So was his question.
He was hoping someone could simply look it up in the user guide and not comb through from dozens of theories.

Great Zak,
Can you post a description of what you saw/how it works?
Maybe a cut/paste out of the user guide.

I wish I could, however I really dont remember the entire process and things might have changed since then. They are defiantly working on it.

I was at the Red event and asked Jim about it. The answer was its still great but its still a ways off.

How's the LCD vs. EVF for focusing right now?

Joel,
From my understanding you can do a 1:1 on the LCD's (which effectively zooms up the picture for critical focusing). I do not know if it works like the HVX-200 focus assist, but is effectively the same thing.
A while back Jim did post a thread warning people about how critical focus would be with this camera and we are already seeing how shallow the depth of field is.

God I hope you can move the image around without having to recompose the camera. I hated that the HVX focus assist was centered. When's your subject ever centered? Like... never? Frankly that blowup thing didn't work for me... I need something you can use full frame on live moving subjects like Graeme's focus assist.
Looks like I'll be memorizing distances to everything for the next month. :-)

Joel: There are already a buncha posts on how this will most probably work. maybe best to look before postings that compare this to the HVX200

I'm way too lazy for that. Plus if everyone searched for everything already discussed then we'd have like 2 active threads. Do you see how that harms the natural flow of RED Chi?
Plus I'm kinda curious what's happening with the cameras in the field right now. 1:1? Zooming? Peaking? Tape Measure?

if it matters, i actually read that thread when it was around and it still didn't make any sense to me. So im still waiting for an explanation of how it works :)

Finally I was able to put my hands on the RED and see focus assist in action.
I will suggest putting the graph in color, green for out of focus and red for in focus portions of the graph. And no kidding once the camera detects the in focus condition in point of interest zone I will put low level tone on audio monitoring port or vice versa (put the tone when out of focus), user selectable.

The Focus Assist function is being improved with each firmware release. If you like what you have seen with Build 8, then I know that you will love the way its shaping up in Build 9.....

I like it as it is, just because it is down there I had this idea of optional audible feedback with definable area of interest at the middle.
Kind of like ILS (Instrument Landing System) You have two needles there but also audible feedback because you can't watch instruments and landing strip at the same time all the time. Also FA guy will have easier life with this, plus it is just Jim style I think…..:-)

Great. I know I instantly had the same reaction as Andrew regarding the colors. You need to quickly know what's in focus without hunting across the entire frame. Andrew's audible idea is pretty interesting.
Easy test: Record a person walking straight towards the lens from 20 feet to 3 feet away and follow focus using the assist feature. Then you'll really have something. Last I saw it looked like you can set marks with it - which is better than nothing - but not REDvolutionary.
If you guys paint right on the frame sorta like False Color then you'll have something really usable. This is truly one of the critical features you need to crush the competition in my mind.
