View Full Version : RED is "fluid"...

RED is fluid. Things change. That is not a bad thing if the motive is good.

Change is fundamental to RED. Specs change. So far, our design and specs have changed for the better. The original RED ONE (NAB 2006) had no REDCODE RAW. Originally 4K could ONLY be recorded out the RAW port. REDCODE RAW turned out to be one of the things that makes RED so important. You now can record to Compact Flash. We didn't charge extra for it.

Our Industrial Design has changed because we are listening. We continue to do so.

Our system is modular to accept change. Our featues are changing because we are learning. Change is good. Don't be surprised if more things change. And we'll promise to try not to charge you for change.

Jim

People need to see that "Specs will Change" isn't a negative caveat, rather it is a progessive declaration that defines and permeates the essence of Red.

Lead on Jim, I know we're in good hands!

RED is "fluid" is very, very appropriate to me on many levels here are two short quotes by Bruce Lee on the power of fluid...(and I have always from the very beginning approached RED--as a philosophy and as a Cameraman-- in terms of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do)

1. "Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves."

2. "Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend."

To me RED is the Bruce Lee of Cameras... it's pholosophy of fluid is my Jeet Kune Do... (definition--Jeet means 'to stop, to stem, to intercept,' while Kune means 'fist' or 'style,' and Do means 'the way' or 'the ultimate reality.' In other words--'The Way of the Intercepting Fist.') This the place where many styles become one style... I could on...

Can't wait to see what's next... it's pretty mind-blowing already.

I would be surprised if things didn't change. This shows that you guys constantly think what to improve.

I have confidence in your motivation.

As much as Jim has unleashed this beast upon the world, I'm sure with this fluid process and wanting to make the camera better it has meant unforeseen costs, escalating with each new innovation or improvement. It really is amazing to see the unit remain at the price point. We should consider ourselves lucky. However I will say now whatever cost increases he deems appropriate, I am 100% behind. I doubt there are many here who have ordered a unit who could afford the alternatives to 4K digital acquisition...although wait, there isn't one.

RED is FLUX.

Heraclitus of Ephesus (ca. 535–475 BCE) said "PANTA R(H)EI" about 2500 years ago.

"This led to the belief that change is real, and stability illusory. For Heraclitus everything is "in flux", as exemplified in his famous aphorism "Panta Rhei" ("Panta Rei"):
"Everything flows and nothing is left (unchanged), or
Everything flows and nothing stands still, or
All things are in motion and nothing remains still."

Our system is modular to accept change.

Luckily the kind of people that are early RED adopters are the kind of people either unfazed or even excited by change.

These days people terrified of change are at a competitive disadvantage.

You trust a man not based on what he says or even on what he does... but on how closely the to line up. Jim, and Red by extension, have me fairly comfortable trusting that any price increase is for my own good.

Not sayin' that I'd be happy with a price increase on any Red products, just sayin' that there would probably be a damn good reason for the changes and it wouldn't be just so Jim could buy himself a new Wiesmann GT MF 5.

Bruce's Jeet Kune Do books are a fantastic read. I love them! (His original and the subsequent books that were published by his wife later.) As you said, his philosophy and views apply so well to one's general life, that it's not surprising how well it fits within the context of RED.

Thanks, Andrew, for the reminder. I'm going to have to revisit my books when I get home.

It would be nice if everyone was given a chance to purchase one of those pelican cases with the laser cut foam... A fluid change for RED in case we run into fluid...

Personally I'd go Hardigg over Pelican, but thats a personal prefance.

Really glad to hear your planning for the long run, and to that regard, Don't lose money. I know the production pack you said your losing money on, we need you in business so make money! You certainly have kept everything as reasonable priced as possible, and those of us in the indie market certainly appreciate that. But if you start to lose money and red becomes a burden rather than a passion, well....

so price things to keep red going. I scrounged enugh to buy the camera, I'll keep scrounging to outfit and update it. That is until I create the blockbuster movie and plant some money trees!

Awesome Words Jim. Change is very much a thing that must be accepted. Those who don't change die....err or is that evolution, anyways, Awesome. Love to see leaders and forward thinkers spilling the most simple secert, that one must be willing to Change so long as it is to the postive! Keep up the awesome work.

Ch-ch-ch-changes are wonderful and necessary, BUT, if you guys are anticipating any significant design changes in the very near future, I'd prefer to put my delivery on hold and let you guys do your magic. I'm assuming most of these "gifts" we will receive will be software related?

Hey unfiltered,

Thanks alot my friend, I first got into his philosophy while I was in the USAF in the early to mid nineties before a short stint at film school in chicago... I feel his philosophy runs parallel to REDs in many ways... RED's approach to modularity is not just rooted in a physical sense of the camera itself but also being "fluid" in one's approach to acquisition, there are many styles of imagemaking and many reasons for it... RED seems to me to simplify one's approach and in doing so it is a more direct form of self expression.

I would delve further but I do not want highjack Jim's thread...

Thanks again unfiltered...

Andrew
