Hi Jim,

What lenses did you use on those 2 shots?

How was the sky? I noticed that in the starting line shot the sky was just a flat blue. Were there no clouds?

Can't wait to try this cam out on one of my commercials. Thanks.

How perfect. Has anyone noticed that Jim has gone full circle here? The original photos up on the RED site showing image sensor size were racing pix just like these. All the detractors were saying "yeah, just DSLR pictures, what a scam," etc. Well here we go. Now Jim has actual frame grabs to replace it with. Nice. Congratulations again to the RED team.

I think we all going to be happy,

I have not used the Master Primes professionally but love the lenses, better then any other on the market, but this RED lenses are just incredible and at 1/5th the price there is no much not to be happy about it.

Thanks Jim for everything so far ( I know there will be a lot more to come).

Hey Graeme,

I was to replay that the frame grabs Jim posted look like photos I could only have taken with one of my Canon L series lenses paired with the 1D bodies, but I did not posted cause I do not know Jim's sense of umor, and did not want Him to think that I was doubting the origin of this shots.

But this pics are truly fantastic.

excellent, makes me want to write a script about racing.

My rig is set up (at Indy) with a Panasonic monitor... we sold out of our LCDs on Friday (even the one I set aside for this shoot). I hate the extra weight and bulk of this monitor for "moving around". And our little LCD kicks it's ass in direct sun. This Panasonic is great for studio work, or late afternoon... but I really can't wait to get a RED LCD back on this camera. I actually finally took it off and "shot blind" this afternoon. Here is a frame grab shooting without a monitor.

The photos that Jim is sharing with us are more than what they seem. They are the culmination of a dream realized. He is standing on the track, photographing his passion with the camera he has wanted all along. It didn't exist 3 years ago and he set out to change that. In the process he has changed everything. No company, no profit and no achievement along the way means more to this man right now than the ability to stand next to his car and capture the moment ....with his camera, the camera he made. This is a milestone for him, maybe one of his greatest. And he let us all in on it. Thanks Jim.

These are absolutly amazing grabs!!

Thank you so much for sharing them with us Jim. This whole weekend has been one hell of a ride; I will remember this weekend for a long time to come and so will the world.

I am only dissapointed I can't make IBC to meet the team and see the camera in the flesh, but, hopefully, by January 2008 I will have my own Red One and Red Primes, that's not too far off. And of course who knows what's to come; as you say Jim, "everything's subject to change!"

Simply Awesome.

Any details on the REDALERT or REDCINE settings used?

I used RED Alert! because REDCINE is being re-built. I opened the files in RED Alert!, checked the WB, opened the histogram, adjusted exposure (not much needed), set DRX setting, viewed in REC 709, made Quicktimes, then selected a suitable frame and output a 4K DPX file that I opened in Photoshop.

I can drag the QT wrapped files into FCP2, edit and output. I can also open the QT wrapped files in QT Player and watch them... then output to a QT movie. I have a lot to do on the plane trip back to CA.

Aloha Jim, great stuff,

- What is the highest shutter speed you shot with?
- How long are your average takes?
- What persentage of the footage is sharp - without motion blur (not focus) due to the speed? Having shot quite a bit of racing I know it can be a challenge.
- Has RED made it any easier?
- Any artifacts from the rolling shutter?

I like your style - Work Hard - then Play Hard.

I bet when it's "Miller Time" ... you feel pretty good.

Thanks for everything.

Aloha,

Aloha Jim, great stuff,

- What is the highest shutter speed you shot with?
1/500th sec, although I shot some at 1/250th, 1/125th, and 1/48th sec.
- How long are your average takes?
Short. Drag racing goes pretty quickly. I do have some longer takes in the pits. Maybe 1 minute.
- What persentage of the footage is sharp - without motion blur (not focus) due to the speed? Having shot quite a bit of racing I know it can be a challenge.
All of my shots are perfectly sharp with just the right amount of motion blur... kidding. It is a challenge. But I have done this before. This camera, or any full frame S35 camera, is a pro tool. Anyone stepping up from an HVX will have a lot to learn.
- Has RED made it any easier?
No. Just better results when you get it right.
- Any artifacts from the rolling shutter?
No.

I like your style - Work Hard - then Play Hard.

I bet when it's "Miller Time" ... you feel pretty good.
Corona and Cohiba Time.

I brought 4 CF cards. I shoot, go to the motorhome, download, wipe the cards and go back out for the next round. In drag racing there is time between runs. That gives me some time to post frame grabs and answer emails.

Oh, I know what I'm buying alright... and I am very excited about the possibilities. I started shooting film forty years ago and if I never see another piece again it will be too soon. I only use the best tools for the job and as far as I can see RED is it.

Oh,...and about being surprised...? That's a good thing. I'm sure I'll be surprised about a lot of things. Like how great the footage looks... or how great Graemes magic focus works... or the magic Stuart manages to put into the software to accomplish a whole new host of features that revolutionize the post production revolution...

Surprised...? Hell yeah... I'm looking forward to it. Bring it on.

Close enough to get rubber on the lens. I can't imagine how this stuff would look at 100fps. Even 30fps at 24 would be cool.

We'd see the tires contort!

Really nice stuff.

Jim,

My respect once again. You're the best business man that we could ask for our money, we already know. My first point in order to put my confidence on a reservation last year. More than one, actually. But as shooter, you have posted the best images to date from the production units indeed. You're a great photographer/cinematographer. You know how to frame it. My respect twice.

My best kudos,
E. :-)

Jim

Thanks - man, this is just unreal. But no! It's REAL!

Jim, you are a true inspiration. When you have a sec, I'd love to hear your description of how you feel at this moment. Rock on.

Thanks Jim.
Probably the best 1st post I have ever seen! Well spoken and I agree 100%!

Did you shoot that blind with your monitor still off? That zoom is incredible!

I took the Panasonic monitor off the camera because I couldn't see shit in the sunlight and I was tired of dragging around 7 pounds of monitor and extra battery for nothing. I went into "Crank" mode. I think I have a pretty good "feel" for what is going on at the track. But I have to admit that sometimes I go back to the motorhome, download and find out I'm not as good as I thought I was. This time, it worked out. Fortunately, there is no script and deadline to meet. :-)

I love this stuff. I love to shoot. I love building this camera. Thanks to our customers so I don't have to fund this all by myself...

That was ISO 250, 1/250th shutter, T8. The "Crank look".

Jim

Jim, or anybody else from HQ in the know,

250 ISO? I thought the camera's lowest setting was 320. Is that an on-camera setting or a software only option? Can the camera go even lower than that? Is there noticeably better detail at 250 than 320 or is it just a way to utilize sunlit exteriors without filters or noise from high ISO? This actually opens up some other interesting possibilities for those of us who want as low an ISO as possible for crisp outdoor shots or carefully lit interiors.

Thanks,

Rudi Herbert

Jim,

Are you able to output FCP timelines via a card (kona or decklink) or a Kona HD i/o, to tape, or are you just talking about outputting digital files.

What I am getting at is: with RED ALERT and FCP could we technically be getting some finished masters from FCP to tape now?

Thanks,

Something about how RED One picks up detail in smoke-whether a cigar, gun barrel, or burnt rubber you gotta love the detail/definition. Maybe just a foresight about RED smokin the competition but whatever it is, it sure is pretty.

The last shot was with the 18-50mm T3 zoom and was shot "blind" (no monitor). I used the old "Sunny 16" rule for exposure since I had no monitor or light meter. The clip is really pretty impressive. I just need some time to get it posted.

We lost 1st round. Bummer. But we are still in the Championship chase. Thanks for asking.

So, that was your car? Explains a lot. You apparently built this camera and drove your employees just so you could finish in time to record this race? You sir, are just another self-gratifying illionare!

Oh, sorry about the race... but happy about the camera. G'luck in the Chase.

P.S. Robbie Gordon was looking for a sponsor last I heard... maybe not a full sponsorship, but a little RED spot on his left front fender? He's going to get into enough scrapes that he will definitely get some exposure.

I brought 4 CF cards. I shoot, go to the motorhome, download, wipe the cards and go back out for the next round. In drag racing there is time between runs. That gives me some time to post frame grabs and answer emails.

So, how long does it take to download the cards to a hard drive, wipe the card, and have it ready to shoot again?

If you fill up the 8GB card, it takes about 4 minutes to offload and about 5 seconds to wipe clean and eject.

The "wipe clean", can that be done in the offloading hardware/software, or does it have to be done in camera. Also, are there any format differences when a card is used in RED and when used otherwise?

No CG or Photoshop manipulation other than levels. I use a Lexar Firewire 800 reader, but any brand of FW800 reader seems to work fine. I wipe the files after offload but while still in the card reader on my Mac.

Offload and clean...

Jim, I assume we're talking REDCode since that's all the camera is doing right now. Looks like it takes about :30seconds per gig to get the footage off the card.
8gb= 4min
16gb = 8min
32gb = 16min

I want to thank you.. This is VERY important information as it gives me a sense of turnaround.. Thereby giving me a sense of what I need to do when working for clients.

Your 2k REDCode Scaled is becoming more important all the time.. Hope that gets out of the development pipe.

By the way, I realize your numbers are not "official" but right now, you're not the owner of RED... Your a SHOOTER!! These numbers hold up for me as well as any could.

I'm thrilled you were out there having so much fun.. Your pictures have some great framing!
