I proclaim it here. By January 1st, 2008, I will have made enough money on my new business to purchase a RED. I will pay cash. (Or hopefuly win the lottery)
I hate you all. You suck for being able to buy the RED. I still love my HVX purchases that I just made. They will hopefuly enable me to learn much, and make me the money to buy a RED setup in the future, but I still hate you all.
(Insanity is going to let me borrow[steal] his, though, because we have the same name)
Seriously, congrats to all of you, the new forum, etc., etc.
I hope to be able to join the ranks this time next year (hoping, hoping, hoping). Until then, I shall lurk and read, and do my participation over at the "other" user.
Lovingly, hatefuly, yours,
Jason

Great proclamation Jason! Put it out there and then it's bound to happen. That's how it works. I keep facing financial hurdles everyday, but by talking telling everybody what I'm doing, it keeps the pressure on to keep chugging even when the baby wont let me sleep for days. I've also pulled together my lens kit, so now I really have to come up with the cash.
And you're right they suck...I mean we suck :)

No worries - if you've got an HVX setup you're already halfway there. Just start shooting for others and before you know it you'll be ready for an upgrade!
Also - HVX ain't a bad camera to be learning on, you know...

If you can't wait:
HVX + M2 = the most functional, economic and available alternative choice.
Or you can take the route of SI, but what about the real availability and the real timeline?
If you can wait:
Saty tuned here, rent the REDone's available in a few months for your projects, make some money, buy your own piece of history next year...

Find some other people. Red 404 is being split three ways, between me and a couple of other people I'm forming a company with.

Ramjet,
If the cost of the RedOne is an issue and you don't even have a rezzie I suggest you do a serious search for someone near you who does have a reservation and is stretching to buy the camera - then offer to go in with them. In the real world very few people will be able to keep the camera busy 365 days a year. Insurance, accessories and other issues make the real cost of the RedOne, even if you use lenses designed for still cameras, over $30K so pool resources. You might even be able to barter crew days on the other person's gigs where you schlep, manage data backups, general AC duties and the like - all the while getting more familar with the camera and its field workflow.
I use an HVX / M2 / Firestore and while the whole set-up is clunky it does make nice images if you have decent light. The biggest weakness of the HVX, IMHO is not the limited resolution of the whole pixel-shift kludge but the narrow range of useable latitude and shadow rendition peccadillos - of course any further discussion belongs on the late great DVXUser board - what, you say - its not dead... just forgotten :D . I kid, I kid.

It's still my opinion that if you reallllly have to stretch to buy a RED, you shouldn't.
That means you aren't taking on enough HD/SD jobs as it is right now to justify the cost, and rental is your best option.

I donīt agree to that logic, but I subscribe to this one:
If your RED will pay itself in a 4-5 year period with your current amount of work, you should buy it - stretching or not - go to the bank if need be, because it is bound to be a good investment.
Of course you need to take into account that you might need new juicy hardware to edit (if you plan to edit yourself), most of the lenses you buy will follow you longer than the cam, and hopefully so will matte boxes and other accesories as well.
Just the way I see it... :)

Getting a Red camera is like making it to the top of Everest... But that is only half way, you have to have a new powerful computer, monitor, drives, a blue-ray burner, software, etc for you to be able to make it back down to the client with a finished product. I just hope 1 in 4 Red owners don't make it back from their productions broke or dead ;-)

:)
It's a proclamation. A year from now :)
I'm not even considering attempting to buy a RED right now. It's too much camera for me right now, and (while an amazing deal) too much money for me.
I'm just starting my business with a 25k loan in HVX equipment. With that, I hope to be in a position in a year to purchase a RED and necessary accessories with company money/finances.
I do love the HVX's, but, well... you know.
Some other things will be coming togethor within the next several months that will allow for the wife, baby, and I to become closer to financially stable. I.E.- wife getting work permit, revenue with my business, blah, blah.
Again, just a proclamation. A new years resolution, if you will. Though it did make for a bit of interesting conversation.
Take care,
Jason

I'm with you Jason. Put it out there and it will become reality. My life has always been that way. When I think it's impossible... it is and when I "truly" thinks it's possible.... it always becomes possible. Simple laws of the universe.
When you come out my way to play with the camera, I'll show you in real-world examples.
Sounds like you may have some things going on in your life that will make possibilities realities. I'm pulling for you. :)
Best,
jason

In a weird way, the Red is sort of obtainable if you save up for a year. That is, if you have a college degree in something and don't mind living in squalor (I'm living at my parents in order to help save up). If no degree, then you'll probably be making low wage and might be better suited spending your income on an education in a non-video field so that you have a fall back career. Business degrees are useful, as are anything in the computer fields. Certain technical vocations (welding, dental assistant, mechanic) are also a good source of income, and you can usually get a degree in those fields in only two years time.
