Hey there

Photos from the casual Red test day out at Orange County and a bonus avi.

At LAX airport security they swabbed Red 23 for explosives, proving as Jim has stated, it's the bomb.

Kind of you to share. I have a couple of questions.

Which Matte Box was being used on those shots?
Does the hardware pictured with the 300mm lens come with the basic pack?

Thanks,

David

For those wondering about the exposure in our "shirt" shots, this image should be telling:

Hi Anders,

The CF module has to be replaced in the near future with one where the CF protrudes as opposed to being flush. You can still pull the card but its a bit tricky. The gaffer tape helps.

Please be aware none of the first 25 cameras are perfect (yet) and Jim made a generous offer to any of those that wished to back out. No one did.

GET SOME SUPPORT ON THAT 300mm PRONTO! Remember 1/1000 of an inch off with a tweaked lens mount is enough to ruin your footage. Ive used all kinds of things as jerry riged support in the past, wallets, washers, camera wedges, anything to take the weight off the mount.

Sure no problem.
Just looked a bit funny for them to design it that way :-)

Otherwise I might need to buy me some fake nails before I get my camera.....

Did you take some spot readings to get a sense of the DR? Looks impressive.

The 300 doesn't way much more than a Master Prime or lightweight zoom. There is a bridge support ring, but we all decided that for our little "tests," it'd probably be fine without it.

I wouldn't go handheld with it, but then again... I wouldn't go handheld with it.

The only light meters we had on set were buried deep within digital still cameras. I'm currently uploading about 200 stills from the day, they'll be hosted on my website shortly.

Just ask the OCART team, a new role was developed for me "CF CARD REMOVER."

Believe me, it was only the sun and heat causing me to look unhappy while formatting the CF card. I can't believe how trippy it is..that the launch day finally came. so insanely cool.

Thanks so much for the cool photos Scott, it was really nice meeting you.

Weight isn't as big of an issue as how far away from the mount the weight of the lens is. The front element on that lens is the heaviest and largest of the group. It looks like the lens is about 11 inches long, so that equals a lot of momentum during a quick pan, or any accidental bump of the tripod. I would cry if I saw a red get harmed in any way this close to birth.

4X4, no? Any problems using such a small MB? Like on the wide end of the 18-50 zoom?

Small amount of vignetting on the wide end of the 18/50

Someone please, please develop a wireless menu control box. Extra points if part of a LCD. Doesn't even have to be wireless. Get it out soon!

Have got an engineer to make up a mounting plate for the V-lock to mount directly to a 'Red Universal Mount' to lose the cage while we're CF only.

Will post photos when it's done.

Man, you already got that battery plate taken care of? That's going to knock so much weight off of the handheld rig...

Too bad the .avi isn't a working link. I'd be happy to watch the red in action.

Really looking forward to seeing this Scott... seeing that part of the time I may be going w/ a b4 RED/abekus coverter for 2k, though still looking at this as suggested by Stuart English... http://http://www.abelcine.com/store/product.php?productid=10870&cat=779&page=2 (http://www.abelcine.com/store/product.php?productid=10870&cat=779&page=2)

Using Evin's 4by4 Chrosziel mattebox the vignetting on the 18-50 RED CF zoom started around 25mm, be aware we were shooting 4096 by 2048 so the width is the more critical issue. A slightly different mattebox design might manage to avoid vignetting on the sides at 18mm but my feedback is that you will want at least a 4 by 5.65 unit. A 6 by 6 seems like overkill to me, more weight and filter cost, YMMV.

A Chrosziel 4x4 may be too small. Try using this one: http://16x9inc.com/products/chrosziel/ac-415-02f110.html

Or, if you want a swing-away, try using this one: http://16x9inc.com/products/chrosziel/ac-840-01.html
