View Full Version : Offhollywood Red Camera Test Shoot

As some of you may already know from Mike Curtis' website www.HDforIndies.com - we broke RED ONE #006 and #007 in today, Offhollywood style.

We gathered a small group of volunteers who offered to come and play with the Offhollywood team on a holiday weekend and shoot some 4K out on an small airfield in south New Jersey.

No one was paid a cent for their time, and to the 16 people who gave Offhollwood the day - I can not thank you all enough.

We did not have "crew positions" other than the DP - Paul McCarthy - we just rocked all day as a team - and several folks getting their hands on our cameras and popping off some 4K -

Stunts we're handled by the best-of-the-best - Manny Siverio - who, as it turns out - just signed on as the stunt coordinator on THE ARGENTINE - so there is more RED is his future!

Precision driving was courtesy of DRIVERS EAST (www.driverseast.com) - the very best drivers on the east coast. I'll post everybody's names who helped later.

Paul called in a huge favor and got Owen from ACTION CAMERA CARS (www.actioncameracars.com) to bring a camera car, crane and his crew for free. (I OWE you a couple of good jobs Owen!!!)

I could go on and on and on - these cameras are AMAZING.

We've shot 35mm, 16mm and tons of every flavor of HD - and it's game over. RED ONE. Period.

TOTALLY "run-and-gun" car stunt/action work - picture was up at 10:00am and we camera wrapped at 5:00pm.

We shot 99 gigs of 4K. We were shooting WHITE cars on a nice hot day in the BRIGHT sun.

Red Zoom 18-50mm, Zeiss High Speed Primes, and a Canon 300mm.

4 RED 8 GIG compact flash cards.

We watched clips in realtime on set all day as we shot.

Not a single camera issue.

And let me tell you ... the footage looks FREEKIN' AWESOME. Our DP looked at the very first clip in a 1K medium quality proxy from Red Alert and cracked a huge smile and said - now ... THAT doesn't look like video.

What a BLAST!!! The first real 4K Red shoot on the East Coast.

I don't think I will forget this day for a long, long time.

I sent an SMS to Jarred, Ted and Jim mid-day and said ... "I feel 17 again!!" (I am almost 41)

So, yeah, if you ever have a mid-life crisis - forget the sports car - buy a Red One or TWO.

We are all taking a day off to be with our families tomorrow, but we'll get some clips and frame grabs when we can -

But Mike Curtis is hangin' with us for a few days and he'll be bloggin' about the adventure - and www.Zoom-In.com is going to cover our first TWO WEEKS with our Red Cameras with blog entries by yours truly -

JIM GEDULDICK came to set and shot TONS of HVX200 behind the scenes (as did res. holder Clayton "Lordnumberzero" Harper) - and Jim is cutting something special together for REDUSERS worldwide - and I expect to upload that on the 4th -

MUCH more to come ....

LOL!
Handles?
we call 'em RED KICKSTANDS!!

So bummed I can't be at IBC this year - will miss you & the gang - don't do anything I wouldn't do ... but alas, we've got a businuess to run -

Right now, Pliny is putting some REDCODE RAW files from the shoot onto a drive that will be hand delivered to TED at IBC - so you can check out some shots -

Later today - Mike Curtis will post some 4K TIFFs "un-corrected" - straight out of RED ALERT on his site HDforindies -

Also, waiting for Jim G. to show up with his down-and-dirty edit of the behind the scenes footage - might slam it up on YouTube today - REDUSER seems a bit ... sluggish ....

Antoine

I read Jim´s post as: they aren´t offering the contents of the premium pack as a set (as originally advertised), but the parts will be available so that you can build whatever you want at your convenience, and at the asked price (which was implied to be higher - as the production cost for those particular items has risen).

Futhermore (I think) Jim said that they would stick to the price of the basic production pack (which contains many of the pieces of the premium one) - despite it not beeing good business.

*Sorry I am too lazy to look up the origianl post, but reduser is so full of posts...

Since this announcment was made about the same time as the first 25 cameras were delivered: I would futher speculate that those first cameras got it at the original price.

Hey Antoine -

Tomorrow I'll come up for air and I'll break down exactly what we bought and give you what we would "recommend" for indie feature shooting based on what we've learned to date -

99% sure Curtis will have some "untouched" 4K Tiffs posted tonight on www.hdforindies.com

Actually too busy today to even turn on our cameras ... is that SAD or what!!

Pliny is uploading the behind the scenes video to youtube right now ... when it's up - he'll post the link - I think it sits in a "render queue" for an hour or so ...

Hey Redusers -

Here we go -

So, yeah ... I know you all want to see footage, and you will, but we are doing a thousand things at the same time over here in terms of testing, not to mention that we have "active" on-going jobs including the DI finish of a great little indie called PRETTY UGLY PEOPLE (shot on Super35).

We most likely will not show footage until we edit and color grade in SCRATCH - and we are waiting for the new build that supports REDCODE RAW which we will have any day - I think the current plan is to debut the piece at a special RED event here in New York on the 19th - that TEKSERVE is putting toghter. TEKSERVE is Offhollywood's reseller and provided the edit systems and system integration for Soderbergh's RED films.

Do not dispair - I have told Mike Curtis (www.hdforindies.com) to post some "untouched" 4K frame grabs as soon as possible - so you can bang on them in Photoshop and post your own color graded versions if you like - have at it - I will say that MOST of what we shot on this initial test - is "too LEFT heavy" on the histogram. Won't happen again, we are learning the RAW thing - which I knew would take a shoot or two to "re-program" our brains - when the histogram feature is enabled in the EVF and LCD - I strongly suspect - it's gonna be EASY.

I am going to be posted daily blog entries on www.zoom-in.com over the next two weeks with the frist post coming on-line sometime today - I decided to do that because I was approached by a fair number of sites and magazines, and Zoom-In is geting about 1.3 million page views a month with a 40% growth rate - and I would DO ANYTHING for Red & Jim to show my thanks for building this camera - and I felt like it would better serve Red (& Offhollywood) to share our first impressions and experiences with a broad audience outside of the REDUSER community. I'll still post here, of course, and I'll get zoom-in to "cross promote" REDUSER - anyway, I'll put the link up when they go live with my blog later today - it's going to be more "general" - written for folks who don't know as much as YOU -

Regarding a post by Jendra (on the Youtube thread I think) on the shoot about why you can see our AC Alex truning screws on the PL mount -

Here are the facts:

After we landed at JFK on Saturday and drove to Paul (our DP's) apartment in Brooklyn Heights - we jumped out of the van and threw a camera up on a steadicam - Alec Jarnagin - our favorite steadicam op - wanted to see it and touch it - his rig was locked up in a truck on the show RESCUE ME (and YES we are going to launch a campaign to get that show shot on RED!!!!) - so, Afton Grant (a REDUSER poster) brought his rig over - we did pop off a few shots - haven't even had time to watch those yet - but we might post one soon - regardless - we are going to do some hardcore RED steadicamin' with Alec VERY soon - and you will see THAT for sure -

Alec noticed that the cylinder around the PL mount was "loose" - I forgot to email or call Jarred that night (I was exhasuted) and the next morning we put a piece of tape around the cylinder - if you look at the Youtube video you can see the tape - I emailed Jarred and he instantly responded - we were having to much fun to stop shooting and at lunch I put my AC Alex on the pone with Jarred - Jarred told him how to get to the screws to tighten the PL mount - so, the reality is that the someone screwed up and didn't tighten down the screws - I am pretty damn sure someone got an earful and I would bet it won't happen again - we did shoot half the day with "loose" focus on one camera - but that's because we didn't stop to deal with it - it took 5 minutes to resolve - the funny thing is we build #0006 at RED - we left #0007 in the box - I think that Aldey would have caught it -

here's some fast tips and first impressions -

If you turn on the camera, set a good focus - pick an F-stop in the BALLPARK - you can shoot images that TOAST the F900 and Varicam - with VERY little effort - and I mean TOAST -

Our crazy shoot in the 2nd with the stubnt drivers was our way of doing the "indie" "micro" version of what Peter Jackson did with Crossing The Line - just get out there and shoot. Our footage is NOT perfect. The HISTOGRAM feature is not yet enabled, and we did not take the time to understand how to use FALSE COLOR/ZEBRAS - we will do that TODAY. We just rated at 320, used a light meter and started shooting -

We did NOT have strong enough ND filters on the shoot. This sensor is SENSITIVE.

What I CAN tell you is that this camera takes STUNNING images. Right out of the box. It's going to change so much so fast. So ... BELIEVE the hype. And it's not rally "hype" anymore ... it's "excitement."

So, Tip #1:

get a three stage matte box + every ND filter made. Thickest we had was 1.2 - and only a clip-on MB on one of the cameras - we needed another three stage and more ND's -

Right now, I have a rented Arri MB - I need to check in with Curt (viewfactor) to see what his reality is on shipping his matte box - but I fear he is behind - we MIGHT just buy two red-rocks - at $500 it's practically disposable - to hold us off until Curt can deliver his - buy yeah, you NEED a three stage. So, Red Rock or Curt - if you have protos to test and want a little press PM me - PLEASE -

Tip #2:

Buy the 18-50mm Red Zoom. WOW!! It's TIGHT. Our Zeiss primes could not keep up. We can't WAIT for the other zoom - JIM, any new shipping estimate on the other zoom? Red glass kicks ass!!! What did you expect, right?

Tip #3:

I need KELLY or JARRED to email the list of names of the pieces - and then I can give you an exact breakdown - but for now -

Buy the Basic Production Pack -

Buy a set of the longer 24" rods - because if you want to have the battery/drive on the back and a studio matte box on the front - the 18" won't cut it - we went with steel - they are making titanium and kevlar/carbon fibre ones as well - I like cold steel -

Buy the TOP RAILS, Handle, and Handle extension and the 4 side arms that make the CAGE - the CAGE is a MUST, MUST have.

Buy 3 - or better yet 4 "universal mounting plates" (you get one with basic production pack)

again, as soon as someone from RED emails me a list of what they are calling each part - I'll break it down for you -

MORE to come - need to run -

Hey Mr. Orange

Of course you are right, but we didn't get to see to many easy to judge movies so far. That has a lot to do with the conversion problems etc.
But when a experienced pro like mark, talks with so much exitement about the cam, that says a lot. Because he saw the real footage and it looks like its great.
I think the offhollywood crew can make decent judgements, cause they work with film and HD on a daily basis.

So yes, I wanna see footage even at 1K. But Marks statements are the best infos for me so far.

Mark,

Thanks for the GREAT post with all those specifics. Very useful for all the users out there and reservation holders trying to figure out what else to order to trick out their cameras.

From helping with the tests last weekend, I just wanted to say publicly how impressed I was with yours & Aldey's thorough knowledge of the ins & outs of this camera and all the accessory options. Being that you are not ACs or camera operators but producers and filmmakers, I've felt and heard some general concern (not about OffHollywood) about production companies buying these camera and renting them out and not having the support or knowledge that the production needs from a camera rental company.

From having already known you guys, I knew you'd be all over the workflow, and I certainly didn't expect you to drop the ball on the camera side of things, but for day one, you were SO ABOVE and BEYOND what I would expect about bracketry, screws, rods, and all that Camera Assistant minutiae that you knocked all of our socks off.

So to the rest of you I want to say, these guys really know how to use these cameras. OffHollywood has jumped in head first to know everything there is to know about supporting shooting with RED: from putting a package together, shooting, field data capture, workflow & post... they do it all! Sure they are my friends and I want to give them business, but I also have to do what is best and right for my projects, and seeing what I saw last weekend, I would rather go with them than a rental house because they can offer FULL support not only camera support.

With so much of cinematography moving to post and workflow being integrated into shooting, I see OffHollywood as a pioneering business model, and would rather work with a company like them instead of a rental house that hands you a camera and expects you to figure out the rest.

Thank you for having the passion and interest to do this RIGHT!

Much respect,
Jendra

FULL DISCLOSURE: I do not work for OffHollywood. I am a friend of theirs and participated in the camera tests this weekend. I am a freelance DP, but I was not THE DP for the test shoot. That was Paul McCarthy.

Hey all - I just posted up a long post about optimal shooting with Red, driving your exposures by the histogram, the benefit of a milky image to start with, and to help illustrate the point -

16 BIT 4K 48 MEGABYTE TIFF FRAMES.

FIVE OF THEM.

Thanks to Mark for letting me post these, and enjoy!

http://www.hdforindies.com/2007/09/red-one-shoot-offhollywood-stunt-cars.html

These are fully gradable images - talked it over with Pliny and decided it was best to put up files in OCN (original camera negative, my stolen terminology). These are EXACTLY as shot off the Red - no sharpening, no tweaking, no nuthin'. While more optimal results can be gained by flavoring to taste in Red's software, this is a good place to start messing with it Photoshop or other image manipulation apps, and for people like Stu to not grouse at me for clipping out info. These frames are a good place to start getting an idea of the lattitude of the Red and what works and doesn't work - white cars in broad daylight.

I have additional notes on how things were shot, but they're back at the office, I'll update the article tomorrow with more techie/shooter info.

These are by far the best and most informative shots I've seen yet. No major Highlight clipping, No highlight haliation or edge effects (redalert might be doing something funny) Great histograms. WELL DONE!

Any idea on what lenses where used for which? Obviously the canon 300 for the slide shot, but other than that Red zoom or zeiss?

(quick and stupid basic grade below. Vignette needs some noise to get rid of the banding)

Álex Montoya
09-06-2007, 02:53 AM
Any experienced DP has any approximated idea of how many stops of difference may there be between the white car paint and the asphalt in the "burning rubber" pic?

Karl H
09-06-2007, 03:13 AM
It might not be AS great as you think. The shadow on the asphalt I assume is being cast by the truck running along side the car. So its not a car in full sunlight against a full shadow.

These pics are very impressive though. It was nice to look at a couple of the pics which only had information in the bottom half of the histogram. You still get a fairly decent image from it when bringing up these underexposed parts

When properly exposed the clarity is great and noise free. I'm much more excited about the camera as a whole now.

Mark & Mike, thanks for posting these! Great examples of RED quality. The detail is truly amazing!

Mark, please let us know when the Tekserve event is going to happen in NYC. I'd love to come and play. Not all of us live in Orange County! ;)

My take on a car still image. I added a lens flare to the highlight and Slight vignette using multiply mode in photoshop. Oh and I comped in a Sky background. :)

I´m on a mac, when I click the link a new window opens and the quicktimelogo appears. after a while the image is shown in that window. I rihgtclick the image and saved it. Then it became a mov-file. I tried to put tiff after the name and open with photoshop but photoshop reficed to open the file.

Wow, just incredible. One of the main difficulties in day for night effects on shots taken in full sunlight is getting the contrast of the scene down to a level where it looks realistic for moonlight.

With the dynamic range we've got now, it'll be soooo much easier. I think you just proved it. Very nice.

FYI -

tomorrow morning we shoot fashion models on a real set, on a real commercial for an asian cosmetics company as a TEST - side by by side with 35mm - high end commercial - well lit - well production designed - one of the highest paid commercial DPs in the business - HOT models .... I will TRY my very best to get permission to post a few 4K TIFFS on Monday -

That image is pretty remarkable. Can't wait to see some of this footage in motion. Mark, when you bring this image up on your grading monitor how does the black background to the far right register? Is there anything funky going on there?

This is quite a stunning photo. Amazing feel to it, very much it's own quality. Seems like you guys are getting a good feel for the camera.

You guys should see this stuff playing in realtime in Scratch while grading -(we kicked out 2K DPX's while waiting for the Scratch to be fully REDCODE enabled) - really crazy cool.

We are trying to be done next wednesday. We will post when it's done.

Hmm.. I'm not in New York but I'd be tempted to drive down and spend a day or two cutting it just to be able to work with some footage. I'd come really cheap too, like free. Just to be able to get a hands on look.

I was there tonight. Offhollywood did great with their presentation and keeping true with informing anyone who wasn't on the boards. It was nice to see the camera up-close and see some real footage being tossed around in the lower floor.
the only bad part of it was that I had to stand the whole way through and that just sucked.

Is SCRATCH a sub $10k program or more?

I have RED RAGE.

Tried to keep some detail in the shadows underneath the car... warmed the asphalt a bit and shadows.... added Graduated ND to sky, but kept the brightest highlights on car white. Sharpened slightly after downrezzing to 1k... gets is a little crispy....To me .... looks like film...

Awesome stuff...

Just wanted to say thanks to Tekserve and Offhollywood for the seminar/workflow demonstration last night. It was really enjoyable. Would've loved to see some moving footage though. I too have RED Rage.

Scratch is $50k - and that's just for the software.

At last I was able to get up close with the RED ONE for my 1st time. As you may already know Tekserve hosted an event last night here in NYC for the guys behind Offhollwood to introduce their RED # 6 unit and demonstrate their workflow.

Couple small things I noted after seeing it finally in person was Yes the RED is no doubt a beast but I could still easily imagine a smaller handheld configuration. I would opt for lighter setup then the Oconnor 2060HD, Its simply huge IMO. My shooting scenarios require small crews and fast setups and break downs, get in and out kind of deal so being light weight and minimal is crucial. (Shooting in Havana Cuba)

Nice compact size Pelican 1510 (Complete with RED logo branding ;) was being used to store body and RED 18-50 and another larger pelican (still not sure what size or model) was being used to store all the accessories in custom cut foam. Would be great to see RED provide this to people soon in the near future but if not I am sure plenty of 3rd parties will.

Scratch is the real deal! I still dont know a lot about the software but all I can say is that its hot and from what I understand...realtime color grading and much more.

Nice to meet Mike Curtis from HdForIndies, great guy and glad his expertise is on board with the RED movement.

I look forward to some reviews and evaluations to start coming in on the RED glass...but my favorite shot I saw was one Mike Curtis did with a Cooke S4 prime I believe, it was jaw dropping for me. Just have to see it to believe it. (Please post a tiff of that CU of the girl when you have time)

Sorry I cant say much that has not already been discussed to death on this forum, just wanted to say thanks to Mark and partners of Offhollywood for coming out and sharing and thanks Tekserve for the hospitality and providing the booze!

Cheers

Mark, Is there any way we could get together for a private Demo of the red system and workflow. I would be happy to buy lunch. If I am going to use this camera, I will really need to increase my computer literacy and familiarity wit the programs associated with it.

Does anyone here have suggestions as to what sytem would be the optimal for simple work flow?
