Love to see something, even a lowly 1080p H.264 would rock. :spidy: :spidy:

Noah,
There have been 2 clips posted.
The first was a short clip of Brook, and the second was a 1k clip posted by Evin shot with his car mount setup.
Sorry I don't have the links right now, hope that helps !
Seth.

the h.264 compression is producing some ugly blocking. I'm trying to figure out a way to produce a super clean 2k export for you guys. I'm in experimenting mode

Why are you bothering with h.264? I hate that codec, go with Sorenson 3, add a contrast filter of about 14 and a saturation filter of about 14 and your golden... and it works faster too :)

In my experience x264 rocks compared to the Apple encoder.
Especially in 2-pass with CABAC enabled.

I've never had any problems with apple's encoder. It was also nice to get it for free from an Apple rep. :whistling:

Never heard of X.264 I'll have to try it sometime, but seriously, give Sorenson 3 a shot, you won't be disappointed...

Your crazy Sorenson 3 is rubbish, I've seen 720p sorenson 3 and it's a lost cause.
X.264 is just what they use to stick it in an .avi container

... So is h.264 I've seen horrible quality come out of that codec as well, and it took longer too LOL. I think the answer lies in how you filter it, I'll dig around an find a nice sorenson 3 example.

Go look at the HD trailers on Apples site. All H.264
Coming from 4K you would think an HD encode from
a RED would be just as good if not better??

"It's a nasty Quicktime Gamma issue that we're looking into. Basically, when we give Quicktime the "right" data, it decides that it knows best and starts changing things......

Yes I agree about h264 and great quicktime trailers.. I am not complaining about it, I am trying to figure out how to get the best results. I am exporting a tiff sequence right now..so it is taking awhile. I won't sleep until I get up a sick ass 2k for you guys. Evin will probably have something in store for you guys as well.

The apple trailers aren't too bad, but I've seen some big issues with banding, and the way it handles shadows never makes me happy, and like I said, it probably has to do with filters. Sorenson 3 right off the bat isn't perfect either, but with some contrast and saturation filtering, looks very faithful, and is much faster to process as well, thats what really intrigues me.

I say just use motion jpeg and lets see this stuff!

I work with my MAC for the most part. For webwork you have to hit that
lowest common platform. I have always had trouble with Sorenson once it hits
a PC. I usually deliver to my webguys a PhotoJpeg Quicktime and they
convert that to Flash anyway. On other websites I deliver an H.264 and
a wmv file. Most corporate clients only want wmv but I give them the
H.264 as well. And most of them are now taking my advice and encoding
the flash from a PhotoJpeg file.

Just a little test of Apple's h264 codec and the free x264:
x264 (http://www.holckowen.com/test1.mov)
Apple 264 (http://www.holckowen.com/test2.mov)
Both will play using Apples h264 decoder.
Encoding time was about the same from a 1080p 10 bit 4:2:2 file and bitrate was capped to 8 mbps.
The first you notice is that x264 does not exhibit the gamma shift, but the apple codec does. Yay!
In the x264 codec you can tune the deblock filter which is way too powerful in the apple version.
I did enable CABAC in the x264 encode, which increases efficientcy a little, but also uses more cycles in the decode. So if you encode 1080p and want laptop user to watch it, disable that.
Edit: Sorry, both links referenced the x264. Fixed...

Very true, web compression is like raping your work. I have seen some very incredible looking flash video though. As much as hate Windows BS, I have to admit, there wmv 9 (i think thats it...) is actually pretty damn good, but it takes forever to compress.

I take a PhotoJPEG QT into Vegas Video and render WMV 9.
Much faster than the crappy WM Enc, and it looks just as good.

Did anyone notice the brief exposure drop at 00:27 into garage.mov?
Was this done by the user unintentionally?

I expect Evin grabbed the wrong ring when reaching for focus. It took balls to sit in the back of the truck like that.
