After some experimenting, I ended up using motion jpega. I also made two h264 compressed versions. I put the small h264 version first.
The motion jpeg version will take about an hour to get up on the server so it might not be up when you check it.

H264 seems to skip frames here on the move from wondow to talent. How is it at your end?
Certainly don't look like video to me ;)

I always use VLC player.
Excellent clip. Pretty convinced on low light capabilities. Would really like to start seeing exterior day footage/stills though. ( :

Ok got VLC. Which is showing me the correct luma/chroma/gamma? QT is looking way more saturated :-/
Matt Setnes
09-03-2007, 03:35 AM
I am not sure about VLC showing the correct information but compared to QT on my PC(using Apple 23"), it shows the gamma the way I like to see it. My system isn't up to par right now to play 2k in QT yet. VLC is looking more saturated than quicktime for me, so it could be how you have your monitor calibrated

I am still very curious about how long it takes to export a clip from Redcode RAW, would love to get some numbers!

Hi everybody,
I downloaded the file, ingested into FCS2 and watched on a Panasonic BTLH1700 throghout a Kona LH. Works as a breeze and the colour is much better than my 23" apple cinema display.
......there are no words to describe the beauty of the images.

CTL trailer 2k is fine.. anyone any ideas?

this looks fantastic. I don't know about 35mm or digital but the 3 clips with motion feels right, like finally we are getting the long ago promised images affordable to serious independent storytellers.
Thanks for sharing! Please keep it coming...

Thank you! That clip was georgeous. I think the computer I'm playing it on at the moment is too slow, as there was some stuttering at the beginning, but the image was really pleasing, the best yet.

Just woke up. Man, I think i will be so sleep deprived for the next couple of weeks..hell perhaps for the rest of my life.
I will do another 2k posting in a bit and I'll keep an eye on the time.

Thanks man! these are really great...
sleep while exporting? :)
2 things I have encountered.. nothing to do with Red..
1, play the proresHQ directly in FCP and the image goes darker on play.. and lighter on stopped ? the CTL trailer PRORESHQ does not.. wierd!
2, at 1920 my Blackmagic ExtremeHD shows the CTL triler on the Plasma fine.. but when I load the 2048 clip from this thread.. it's 1/2 scale on the TV :-/
any ideas? obviously a bit off topic so maybe take this to the apple forum also..
cheers

1. the clip is actually motionjpega, not prores
2. not sure why, could it be that the blackmagic has problems with motionjpega?
how do the h264 stuff look with blackmagic?

I looked at all 3 versions. I see a lot of noise in the shadows and banding on the side of the stairs. It's much less on the large file. The H264 versions look terrible on my machine. The nosie dances like crazy. Could it be my playback? (QT on Macbook Pro) Am I looking at the same files?
Please don't take this as critisism, I'm really glad these clips are being posted and I know it's probably export compression. I have a big feature in the works and I would love to shoot Red.
Cheers,
Chris

dancing noise is definitely h264 qt. I have experienced superbly clean playback when exporting tiff sequences at 2k.
but do watch those apple trailers again after seeing this. those trailers have noise issues too if you look closely.
Granted it is easy to spot out even the tiniest of issues... step back realize that there really isn't ANY camera that can output moving images like this. Perhaps that dalsa can be comparable, i don't know as I have yet to see a single .mov clip from them at 2k..but then again, it doesn't record to compact flash nor does it cost 17,500 for the body.

Again, I didn't mean to sound overly critical. I know H264 can have problems. Just hoping to discuss.
Thanks for the reply.

So when you guys are monitoring at 2K, you're not experiencing a lot of the issues we're seeing on these posted files? That's great news. That sitting clip was great, even in MotionJpeg. Some of the stills I have seen posted have had a number of issues, but I have chalked that up to compression, sometimes low light, etc.

No worries Chris, as the reason for the delay in posting was due to the issues you are describing. I have been testing various export options. Motionjpega aint bad.

The latest 2k clip (h264) was very good indeed...
But for PC, the only player capable to overcome the faulty gamma and come closer (not perfect) to what I see in my PowerBook is KMPlayer (free) if you press Alt + Z when it starts. On the screen you'll see "Level controls: on" (remember to turn it off for other videos).
ΒΤW, a smooth filter applied in default was mentioned before, but that's not true!
Space for pause/playback
Alt+Enter for full screen/normal
Alt + F4 to close
ESC to minimize on the system tray
The motion jpeg clip was too dark (maybe gamma applied twice?)
Also, when I tried the h264 clip on the latest VLC (on PC) it gave me the "blue screen of death"....and the PC restarted!
There should be a universal format that would display exactly the same on the same monitor whether the computer is MAC or PC...

I have played the clip with VLC on my PC (actually on two different ones) and its fine. The clip labeled "sitting_2k_h264.mov" doesn't have any gamma tags so it should be reasonably consistent on calibrated monitors even from different computers.

On PC, I took the zip file (which had no extension when extracted) and added .jpg, brought it into Vegas as an image sequence at 2k and went to town. Thanks for this sample, guys!

erm.. how did you do motionjpga and get qt say its prores? even fcp says it..
makes sense why fcp alters gamma on play..
I dunno it's 1/2 rez.. think its a 2k thing :/ 1920 looks fine..
gonna find the prores one and try..
As a still it looks really good at 1080 on the plasma though..
Really nice to play with in color also :)
post more later

Thanks, but I didn't do much really.. :-/ If I can remember..
A touch of fill light and recovery in LR ( i know i know!! but it's neat!)
offset red hue to more orange.. lowered red sat by a bit
export to PS
Levels
Neat image but not to heavy
Dupe layer
Blur
Levels on blured layer
set to screen @5%
Done.

I have played the clip with VLC on my PC (actually on two different ones) and its fine.
1. Which version of VLC did you use?
2. What was the cpu, mb, vga?
3. Which OS;
3. What was the monitor;
The clip labeled "sitting_2k_h264.mov" doesn't have any gamma tags so it should be reasonably consistent on calibrated monitors even from different computers.
So then, why it is'nt consistent?
This is not a new problem, thousands of users experience this every day for years!
My PC:
CPU: Intel Core 2 duo 6600, 2GB RAM
MB: ASUS P5N32-E SLI
VGA: ASUS EN8800 GTX
OS: XP SP2
MONITOR: Apple Cinema 23" Aluminium
Whithout any data, no conclusions can be drawn -just claims.

Ok waiting to play with prores..
took the motiojpg into fcp..
set blackmagic to output 1080i 25hz 10bit and I get a 1/2 scled image on the external monitor when playing.. stop.. and it go full frame..
so I walk upto the plasma on the wall..
holy fu£$@£$ £$@2 wow!.. sorry.. but I have never.. EVER seen so much detail, it's like I'm there! especially on the girl.. (no pun :-/)
Only time I have seen something with this much detail was on a job using stills from a 1DSmk2.
Seriously impressed..
Gonna go grade play with the rest now :)

In answer to your questions:
VLC version = 0.8.6c
CPU = 3 GHz core duo
RAM = 2 GB
Display adapter = Radeon X600 256 MB
OS = XP SP2
Monitor = Dell 2405 FPW (1920 x 1200 32 bit color depth)
So then, why it is'nt consistent?

I can't be certain why you are experiencing inconsistencies, but I do have a test that might be worth making.
I will write a small C program to change the gamma tag and apply it to the .mov file and see how VLC reacts (or doesn't react) to different tag attributes.

Very nice. I downloaded the file then exported from Quicktime pro as a 720p mpeg4 file. Then I put it on a Sony memory stick and played it out on a PS3 connected to a 42 inch Panasonic plasma.
It looks awesome!

Why isn't using anyone the ProRes regular quality settings? I though the HQ only for multiple pass rendering. It would make these files much smaller. This RED cam stuff is amazing. So when we getting them 4k monitors with the glowing red backlight. :)
Should be possible to have posted one or two small DPX 2k sequence from REDalert to test the potential workflow on a Mac w FCP6 and Color ?
Please, please, please ... thanks.
