I know, since this is not about the REDs (yet), it is kind of "other cameras" but it still is a very basic approach.
Introduction: I shot with a Canon 400D (XTi) so far. That was my first digital camera, I was all filmstripy before. But it is about time to reinvest into something new.
Presumption: Be it Canon, Nikon, Sony or one of the other companies, they all produce cameras in different price ranges. For example Canon (just the one I know best) always hat the single digits (1D, 5D, now 7D), the double digits (30D, 50D...) and the triple digits (350D, 450D, now 550).
Question: How other than the obvious features like pixel count, sensor size and number of full RAW frames per second do these differ?
I'm asking this because e.g. the new Canon 550D is supposed not to differ in its video mode from the 7D, so I figure that it must be in the stills department. What makes the differences? What is important when selecting a stills camera? How can you justify jumping from one price range to the next?
Please keep it basic and general, I'm just interested in common knowledge so that this doesn't offend any of the moderators. :) Thank you! Fx
