Hi everybody.
I was just thinking about my dx lenses. I've got a 17-55 2.8 and a 10.5 mm 2.8.
I know these would be useless on a S35 Scarlet, but was wondering if anybody knew the crop factor on a 2/3 scarlet?
Thanks, and peace :emote_hippie:

I believe it would be roughly 2.5x

Assuming for the sake of argument that these cameras use the full dimensions of the sensor (they don't, but this should be fairly close), according to my math, the "crop factor" should be:
from 'FF35' to DX - 1.52x
from DX to Scarlet 2/3" - 2.49x
from 'FF35' to Scarlet 2/3" - 3.79x
On your DX Nikon, the 17-55 has the same field of view as a 26-84 on a FF35 camera and on a 2/3" Scarlet it has the same field of view as a 65-209 on a FF35 camera.
I'm not sure DX lenses will be useless on Scarlet S35, by the way. DX format is 24x16mm and Scarlet S35 is 30x15mm which isn't THAT much bigger. The DX lenses probably have a little leeway (I've heard that some of them will come close to covering FF35 at one end of their zoom range or another) plus the Scarlet will probably not use the entire 30x15mm area. So they may just squeeze by.

Hardly useless at all! Nikon DX (APS-C format) is roughly the same width as Super-35 or about 24mm. DX lenses are typically designed to cover about a 30mm or larger image circle.

Exactly. DX lenses are probably the perfect fit for the S35 Scarlet, and arguably the greatest value in motion picture lenses available. They would be useless on the FF Scarlet, though.
I would not use them on a 2/3" Scarlet. They'd all become telephoto.

Way to copy what I already said about DX lenses, Jeff and Jaime. Cheaters. :)
Yeah I'm sorta interested in DX lenses for the S35 Scarlet, my only concern is that because even now, but especially moving forward, DX is sorta the prosumer cameras and FX is the pro cameras, so many of the DX lenses tend to be not poor quality but not quite pro quality.

Oh, the build quality will certainly be way lower than the nicer FX lenses, and nowhere near proper cinema lenses, but if the objective is to save $$$, you can't really go wrong with DX lenses.

Did this test on RED with my Nikon 17-55mm DX and optitek mount.

I was looking for a sloution with stills lenses that would give me a good wide zoom.
I also got the 10.5 which looks pretty cool.

Hehe. Ooops. I didn't read all of your post.

That is true. I try to avoid purchasing DX format lenses if there's a FF lens available. The last APS-C format lens I bought was the Canon EFS 15-85. That is a really nice lens, very underrated. Excellent walk-around lens for shooting with substantial available light. Took the Canon 7D on vacation with the family and that's the only lens I brought with me. OK, I admit, I also brought the 50mm f1.2... But I only used it twice when shooting at night.
For my Nikons, the only DX format or non FF lens I own is the Tokina 11-16. I love that lens, I also have the PL version from Duclos.

Let's not give the DX lenses a bad rap they don't deserve. Yes, there are consumer-grade DX lenses, but there are consumer-grade FX lenses as well. But the Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 is a beautiful lens. The 10mm fisheye is a delight. The 70-100mm VR is a great DX lens. (thought it really falls down used as an FX) All well built, fairly fast, and sharp. And they all work well with an Optitek mount on Red One. And I have to say I love that Tokina 11-16 too.
