View Full Version : RED Rocket™ Questions about RGB 10bit and Dreamcolor output

I've been looking at purchasing a RED Rocket™™ for a while now, and I thought that now would be the time to make my move, especially considering the special bundled price with the MX sensor upgrade. I do have a couple of questions concerning how the RED Rocket™™ would fit into my workflow. Perhaps the answers to my questions are to be found somewhere scattered about the reduser forum... somehow it would be nice if we could centralize all of what we know about the current uses for this accessory.

1] I am currently using Apple color to grade, or at least I was using it until REDCine X came out with the new color science. I haven't had a chance to try the most recent Apple color plug-in... from what I gather, REDRocket doesn't work yet with Apple color. But it does work with the following (please correct me if I'm wrong and indicate other softwares that can harness REDRocket:
• REDcine X
• Scratch

2) is it possible to connect the RED Rocket™™ directly to a Hewlett-Packard Dreamcolor monitor? Is it possible to get 4K to 1080p conversion to play on this monitor? I guess the question here is what does the following statement from the red.com store really mean:
"Plays full quality 2K scaled from 4K footage realtime through system graphics card and monitor."

3) Can one actually get 10 bit RGB out to the Dreamcolor using this configuration? I imagine it depends on the graphics card being used? Are there currently any graphics cards that support 10 bit RGB out via HDMI or out via displayport? Would this new video interface from MOTU be of any use in this equation?

http://www.motu.com/video-products/hdx-sdi/

Or perhaps one of the MXO cards from Matrox or one of Blackmagic's graphics cards/interfaces?

I know I'm asking many questions... am I one of the only people on this board who is confused on how to get from A (.r3d files) to B (1080p rescaled from 4K out to 10 bit RGB)?

Perhaps someone could come up with a sticky to list all of what the Redrocket can and can't do at the moment.

Many thanks for your input.

Jean

I also just posted in that thread started by Sanjin.
I have both Redrocket card and matrox mxo2LE with max. you can not monitor out of redrocket via the matrox MXO2. you have to go from redrocket out to dreamcolor---BUT, how to achieve 10 bit monitoring? conversion box i belive. As long (in my case) as it does not require a pcie card as i'm all full with those slots.

So, how to go from redrockets hd-sdi out to the dreamcolors hdmi or display port in in order to achieve 10bit monitoring?

what about DVI output from Rocket going into HDMI on dreamcolor via DVI-HDMI cable?
isn't this 10bit?

DVI dual link as far as i've been told, is 8 bit only.

I just got my Rocket and have a Dreamcolor screen.

Connected through DVI this works really well, with the limitation that it is 8-bit only, since DVI doesn't do 10 bit.

Everything else works well. Frame rates of 23.97, 24, 25, 29.97 and 30 work, dreamcolor engine is working, scaling can be set correct, 4.5k works. Frame rates seem to be accurate, without stuttering and tearing. Image is beautiful, no banding is visible in gradients, overall very happy.

I have a AJA LHi on the way which should be possible to ingest the 10 bit HSDSI from the Rocket and convert it to 10 bit HDMI, will give an update about how that works.

Just one word about the AJA Hi5: if you read the manual then it says it can do 10 bit only in YUV mode, in RGB in goes back to 8 bit which makes it kind of useless for this application.

But it would appear from the Hi5 3G manual that the 3G model can do 10-bit RGB 4:4:4

Ahh, my mistake. I was looking at the Hi5! You are right it should do 10bit RGB.

According to info and specs a German product

LynxTechnik YellowBrick 3Gbit (http://www.lynx-technik.com/index.php?id=520)

SDI to HDMI converter also supports 10 bit RGB 4:4:4.
