There is just so much information in the RED footage that it is never a bad shot. I tried to correct this still in photoshop and this is what I got. This is from the FXGuide.com (http://www.fxguide.com/article446.html) article

This is from a jpg!
Done in Photoshop using 3 masks 1 for hair background and eyes. This is just major sweetness! Black is so clean after I lightened it up so much.

Fantastic work, Nik! It really is amazing what good color grading can do to an image. Can't wait to play with my own footage sometime in December!

Thanks for sharing the image.
We have been experimenting (in our copious off time) with some of the posted images and clips as well. Our editors are just besides themselves with how much leeway many of these images have.
We can hardly wait till ours come in this December!

What are you guys using to CC ?
I normally use FCP 3-way.. I have the app COLOR but I think its a piece of crap right now.. too many bugs.. too slow.. poor workflow..
I've recently started experimenting in AE but I'm so new at it in that program..

On the first post I removed alot of the blemishes That is why it is so huge and you don't see the major blemishes. No bluring just healing brush over a few major areas.

I don't know to my eyes the fx guys got the perfect slightly underexposed filmic feel to it....they nailed it. For guys who are looking at the red as a filmic camera you have crushed the hell out of all that wonderful latitude the camera delivers.....Choices choices...i gasped when I saw the beautiful roll off the fx guys got but its all about personal aesthetics and I say go for it. I'd say go easy and leave the sharpening alone!

But go easy on "this is best CC" as CC is really depending on what you try to express out of your story.
This camera definitely rocks in term of CC possibilities!!!

As the DOP on these - effectively - I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your grading. We will be taking the 4K files to the most respected daVinci colourists here, and having them grade the shots at full res. Of course, I wanted to grade them before we posted them but we figured that would defeat some of the benefit of positing them, and we did not want to wait.
Just so you know - in concert with RED HQ - we have dramatically improved these shots - by improving the file conversion RED Alert stage. It is a natural part of the process to learn how to better work the software and experiment with the settings. As we have learned - so the images have improved (not that they were that bad to start with). We film again tomorrow, this time under lights.
Again so great to see the creative enthusiasm and cool grades (not sure about negative saturation - but hey ;-)

Hi Mike
thats good news about RedAlert. Did you manage to get rid of the striping/edging around the highlights on the indoor shot? I wondered whether this was indeed caused by the default sharpening in Red Alert.

As the DOP on these - effectively - I just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your grading. In that case, here's my take, set to sRGB colour space so those on browsers should see an accurate rendition. Nothing fancy or weird, just a nice, natural look. I'm just amazed at the information in the original TIFF file when playing with it in Photoshop - well done Red, and well done Mike on a gorgeous shot!

Hi Mike, very much enjoy your site and fxguide interviews... I'd update the jpgs and downloads on your website with less aggressive edge sharpened versions... those settings give the illusion that you shot with a cheap handycam. I'd take a cue from Mike Curtis apporach at HD For Indies and put up flat, completely neutral versions if possible...

On the first post I removed alot of the blemishes. No bluring just healing brush over a few major areas.
Keep in mind that this kind of technique is awesome for stills, but when you have to be consistent from frame to frame (and have to correct each frame individually 24 times for every second of footage you shoot), it adds up FAST. It's fun to grade these stills very specifically, but unless your profession is a professional color timer, this may take up a lot more time than you realize (or have).

That was our Cooke 75 mm Prime... Wanted to see what our Masterprimes would have done...but oh well a shoot day is only so long. I do have to say you guys should see this stuff projected... It really has a sense of weight to it in color grading on a professional projector. It doesn't have the same organic nature as film in grading but that just takes the colorist adjusting. You start to realize how much resolution you have when on a barco 2k you can crop... one thing though under a heavy grade it does have a noise pattern... which can be jarring when you cut from a full frame to a crop...Same issue as film.

Jeff answered re lens - I will check if I have the fstop- I think it was 5.6 .
This was also one of the first images we posted - before I understood the software and issues fully, so that would have added to the 'bite'. Operator error - s it were but then I had only had the camera for half a day by this stage

I'm really starting to like Color. I just wish it would support 4K so I didn't have to keep piping through Shake!
EDIT: some notes: there's an ovoid secondary on the face, I couldn't get it hot enough without doing that, but I was able to just use both sides of the secondary to acheive the look - one for the face, then another for the rest of the picture. Of course, tracking that over a moving shot might be a little harder... I'm itching to dig into some actual CU footage!
