The first ~1,500 cameras got numbers. I don't think anybody who ordered at NAB '07 or later got a true "camera number".

No camera number for U, sorry. You're looking at a camera arrival of around early next spring (march or maybe even april).

So I don't get this.. cameras after 1500 don't have a number? I mean, they have to have a serial number.. I wonder if it will still climb sequentially

That will be pretty cool, 10 years from now, knowing that I have an etched-in original #363..

Sure they will have a serial number, and it will climb sequentially I guess. But the numbers are no longer preassigned to the order. When someone cancels his or her reservation then all the following numbers can shift down. I think that this is the main reason behind the new policy.

RED ONE is the first time I ever ordered anything and got a firm serialnumber from day one... itīs not usually how itīs done - itīs impractical from a lot of viewpoints which is probably a good reason to abandon it.

Having the serial numbers in the beginning had a very important effect that gave the early adopters a sense of ownership to the product - a very important thing for those who jumped on board while some where still shouting "Scam!" - that is obviously less needed now as RED has started to deliver.

(My thoughts obviously)

I wonder when RED will stop etching in the serial numbers on the left side of the camera

I think that's first 25 or 50 only.

Probably at 499

I have 500 !

Actually, maybe they'll do it for the next 25, but I would be surprised if they keep on after that.

Cheers,
Damien

PS Brook hadn't posted yet

Hey, this is a bit off topic but I think I remember seeing one ofthe reds (I think it was from the FXguide online mag) that had "Hollywood" etched in white on the side. Does that mean they did go ahead with the idea of letting people "Name" their cameras?........Or have my meds just worn off?

I would love it if this were an option when paying for my camera. I wouldn't mind a nominal charge to have my #791 engraved on the side with a name of my choosing. But I won't tell y'all what I'll name it, for fear of someone stealing the name!!!

Hollywood is one of the pre-production cameras. All of them had a name engraved on the side. Hollywood is now over in Amsterdam visiting some friends.
