By now you've seen some of the earliest test footage coming out of the Red One and RedAlert! software. What is your first impression?
This is an anonymous poll.

I'm more psyched than pre-release because I know its alive and making pretty pictures..
Can't wait to blow some money that I don't have.. !

Absolutely phenomenal!
What's happening is stunning, and Im very happy that RED has been successful at delivering a fantastic product. What's even more crazy, this is only the beginning........................

So Pappas, I have seen your journey from the Canon to the HVX.
Are you getting a RED?

One thing people need to keep in mind is that this camera will be capable of really lousy images... in 4K. It will all depend on the user.
That said, when I look at the images posted by Jannard of the stock racing cars, my heart soars! And I'm not even into cars!!!

I agree there should be an "as expected"

Yes, as expected.

I was definetly happy with the stuff we saw SO FAR. I knew the stuff that would be posted early would be really gorilla style run and gun and wasn't expecting a high production value look. Don't get me wrong it was a good indicator of what was possible. However, the stuff we haven't seen yet from the other early red cameras is probably gonna blow minds. Like the stuff they were working on in New York. Those are the ones That I'm really reserving judgement for.

What I can say from what I have seen the last three days, is what I have expected: RED one gives back all of your imagination and knowledge. If imagination and knowledge aren't that kind of Peter Jacksons or Jims, it's not the fault of RED one, it's just because the camera deserves more of all our imagination and knowledge. Much more.
Sorry, english is not my mothers language.

In surveys you should never put up an answer that's exactly in the middle because this is what most people would pick. From the textbook... :nerd:

I'd say 2/3 are up and a 1/3 is down with the actual outcome though I think it's still soon for an accurate opinion. I'd wait for further footage. More footage from anyone else? We've been waiting for more than one year and a half and we already have at least 25 units out... Moreover, this is reversible digital data, not film stock :)

So far it's hard to realy judge. There's to much compression stuff going on. RED code to prores, prores to quicktime etc. The whole conversion stuff will play the main role in the succes of RED. We the RED users will have to help each other to find the perfect workflows to get the nice pictures into the right fromats, to finaly show the 4k, 2K, 1080p glory to the audience.
Don't get me wrong. I realy like what I see so far, but there will be a lot of work for the RED team, to provide us with the right path for all the transcoding, downconversions etc, etc.
I think at the end of the year, we will finaly be there.
So keep on rocking RED team and all RED owners so far. The journey has just started.
Cheers
Tim

How old are RED Registration holders:
1) between 0 - 19 years old
2) between 20 - 35 years old
3) between 50 - 65 years old
4) 65 years old and up

I haven't voted yet because it's too early.
I have to say I'm pleased with the general quaity and DR, but I am noticing the wavelet compression in the shadows or underexposed areas (as people noted especially in the blue channel).
I have to say I didnt not expect this. Redcode has been touted as a visually lossless codec from the start, with quotes such as 'its indistignushable from the uncompressed RAW image'; but I think it's quite clear that you can see the compression artifacts which would not be there on the uncompressed file.
Dont get me wrong, I'd be very happy if I saw this compression technology without the hype (its better than any other codec Ive worked with), but the hype led me to believe I wouldnt be able to see it at all. Once you push underexposed areas I think the compression does become noticable

Are we all certain that it's the REDCODE that you're seeing?

We're learning new things all the time... such as this tidbit that can explain some of the 2K and smaller QT issues with noise and wavelet...

Right now, I think all the issues we've seen from early footage are entirely RED ALERT processing issues... and by issues I mean lack of knowledge on how to use it plus various parts of it that are still works in progress.

The only TIFF file I've seen with a messed up blue channel so far has been the Garage TIFF. I think Jim specifically stated that the messed up blue channel there was a compression gone wrong issue. Everything else has looked great. Unless I'm missing something...

I just reviewed TIFF files: Hero, Eyes, the Blonde FX Girl and only the Garage TIFF has some type of compression aberration going on in the blue channel (crazy noise). Maybe somebody with the tech know-how can explain it away...

ok thats intresting.... did anyone explain what was going on with the indoor 4K tiff files. In_out.tiff and erm.... the other one where they were sat on the armchair - that too had strangeness in the blue channel

Jim discussed this specifically. Please look it up in his past posts... gotto go work now.
For me... I agree w/ Emanuel... More footage is needed and I need hands on time. I am also very much in the air about the RED glass...

I think this survey after what, two working days? have elapsed since initial limited release of cameras... seems a bit early yet. I'd say this camera is different enough from what's gone before that it's going to take quite some time, at least months before everything from shooting to post is understood well enough for good creative decisions to be made throughout the process, and polished output generated. Looking at "here's the first image when we turned it on" isn't such a meaningful judgement in my opinion. Maybe it would for a full-auto consumer camera, but not for a pro tool that leaves all the post options for you to discover.

the only thing i have determined so far is that my quad g5 and dual g5 macs are both too underpowered to playback prores 422 at 24fps. at first i was worried that the red footage was doing a weird sony fake 24 frame rate thing but then i realized i was seeing quicktime frame rates as low as 12fps. i guess the intel optimizations are for real.
all the other stuff i've seen (lower than 2k) plays great and looks even better. red has met my preliminary expectations and will hopefully exceed them them when i get my hands on #121.
