Evin, I've now spent more time on your shot than you did...

Anyway, here's a quick track test just to kick the tires and see how things work. I'm very keen to know how RED handles in these situations, so was anxious to DO something and the garage footage was there, so...

http://ftp.datausa.com/imageshoppe/outgoing/RED/GARAGE_tracked.mov

Syntheyes was the program, and the overall pixel error was .67 something, which is pretty good. No adjustment for barrel distortion, which I'd normally do before anything else.

I built up some quick geometry to see if everything stays in place and it seems to work well... not the best shot to explore what effect rolling shutter might have, but not the worst one, either.

It's easy to do a track and simply drop an object into the scene... a bit harder to make the environment surround the entire plate and this is the sort of thing that will need to be done in the actual testing by you-guys-who-know-what-you're-doing at the LART.

I'd do more geometry (overhead beams, etc.) , but the little 1K QT isn't worth the bother or the extra effort at this point.

Hey, do I qualify as first 3D track with a production RED? Hehehe...

Easily tracked/stuck a logo on the floor and wall with Monet.

Would like to try it on more quick pans..and cover other such concerns.

nice work btw

Wasn't that shot an h264 download? You'll get some DCT drift in h264 as well, so results will only be better with the full 4k redcode plates.

Yes, it was h264... if we had the original files we'd be happy and I'd do more to it... I re-graded it before starting which didn't help matters either as I popped out the banding and blocking... but it was a fun test anyway and at least we know there isn't a ridiculous amount of slew to deal with, or the geometry wouldn't hold up, which is more than I knew before...

The 18-50mm does have some barrel distortion at that mm setting however... as much as I'd expect to see from a good Nikon or Canon still camera zoom at that range, IMO.

Looks good since that was from a compressed file. It should be interesting to see other tests and studies on the actual files. Good work!

thanks jim, I have syntheyes too and to my mind this is encouraging. The tracking should only get better at 2K/4K and from a Redcode file.

Guys, keep your eyes peeled for the right footage at the right resolution to do these sorts of tests on...

Looks pretty nice as-is. The track slides a little bit right at the beginning but locks in almost immediately and stays there. With a little finessing it would be a solid track, and with a full-res copy of the footage as a base you might not need much finessing at all.
