Seems like 32GB is around the corner.

It doesn't look like those will be fast enough. I think the next step is 16GB cards to actually be on the market in a month or so. In due time, though.

A handful of 16GB CF cards is all anyone would ever really need for feature film work. EFP or documentaries will surely operate using a RED DRIVE. I'm looking forward to RED branded 16GB cards!

Sadly, that would be true.
A-DATA classify their CF cards into three categories, from fastest to slowest:

- TURBO (16GB being 266x)
- SUPER (8GB being 80x)
- SPEEDY (16GB, speed not listed, but I think it's 40x)

So the announced 32GB SPEEDY CF won't be a good choice for RED it seems.

EDIT: here's a PQI 300x, 16GB also:

SPEEDY? Ha.

If only someone made a simple sata (esata?) device that could raid a couple CF cards together...

If only...

There are two threads on this; this one seems to be alive, I posted this question on the other without any answers yet:

How much recording would fit on a 16G/32G card, say in 1080p (which might be the resolution many of us might initially work with).

Since 1080P is not a Red camera option (but a software export afterwards) the question is not very interesting (why should you save to CF cards after exporting)…

But normally it would be around 1GB pr minute.

Isnt the RED solid state magazine just some cards or chips raided together in a box with the sata hookup and rod hook up for the red already designed?

2K RAW Windowed would yield around 30 min with a 16 Gig chip.
Twice that with 32 Gig of course
REDCINE could then export an oversampled 1080p.
I don't believe 35mm oversampled 2K (or 1080p) exists any more as an option.
1080p recording is a memory pig anyway IMHO.
REDCODE RAW rocks the house.

Still wish they'd left 720p and 1080p though...
I know, I know, I'm a minority.

The point is that 16GB are right around the corner (October??) and 32GB will follow. My prediction is in the Spring.

At least this memory configuration is improving faster then P2s did and at a much better price!

Cheer,
G

I know, I know, I'm a minority.

There have been many passionate discussions about the possibility of abandoning 720p and 1080p. There are many people which still want thses options. From my understanding, because it is not possible to implement both 2k scaled and 2k windowed with all the frame rates possible with the above mentioned options, it has been stated by Red they are looking into offering users the choice of loading up, whenever they need them, either all the 2k options or the RGB options through a firmware update.

I hope that works out. True interoperability...

Cheers,
Damien

I guess, coming from a documentary field, I just simply want to know how much footage I can get on the cards. Also, I am not particularily interested in recording in the highest possible resolution because most of my work goes to television. Now, there is no need to tell me that if I record to the highest setting and downconvert it's gonna look great. I know that. I am looking for the best current quality vs. mag capacity ratio, which is possible within the Red workflow. Anybody could elaborate on this?

i know it's rounding up but to be safe for variable data rates overhead, assume 2 gb/min at 4k 24fps. divide data rate by 4 for 2k. but why bother with cf for docu work when red drive will store 20 times more?

Thanks wigby, just looking at various options. CF are obviously lighter and less sensitive to shock. In the end it will all boil down to price x capacity ratio, providing the same recording codec/quality.
