I really don't like the floating windows in Redcine-X. I much prefer the old Redcine window/layout. Does it bother anyone else? It reminds me of the old After Effects window layout where you always have windows covering windows.
With all the great features I want to use it, but every time I open it I am spending more time trying to organize the damn floating windows, so I close it and go back to work in the old tools.
Flexibility it great, but none of the windows are the same size, so you can't even organize it nicely.
Are there any plans to do something better? Please!!!!
Or does everyone else love the floating windows?

I've been working with UI design for the web (and some software) for quite a few years - so this is one of my all time favorite topics.
Turning on the "application workspace" does wonders in terms of overview, but it would be great with a more subtle "look" (ie. windows without background images and textured headers). Hopefully one day they will make it skinnable and we can make it look like aperture or lightroom ;-). If you peek into the software it's actually possible to change the UI quite a bit by editing a pretty straight-forward stylesheet so making it skinnable is definitely a possibility.
The good old "cascade all windows" or "fit side-by-side" would be nice, but this app definitely works better on multiple monitors or with screen resolutions above 1920x1200 pixels. It's nice they made it possible to save the layout ;-)
A cool feature would be to let the user "scale" each window or the whole app except the preview window of course.
Yes - I'd love to redesign this application :-)

The worst thing is that they don't have closing buttons! Now if you want to close a window that is in the way you have to go to the menu, find out what the window is called and then click to close it. Why? Why not closing button?
I think the idea behind RX is really nice but the interface could use a lot of clean-up.

That would not be so bad if the app would save window state so the next time I opened, the windows would be where I left them, and the close windows would still be closed. :)

Or be able to double click on the window bar to toggle it up or down.

I am not a fan at all of the UI in RC-X. RocketCine is 1000% percent closer to the user experience I'm looking for, even then it has lots of room for improvement. The floating windows are just the begining of RC-X's issues. The "puffy" window frames, wasted pixels all over the place, that annoying texture all over the place, etc etc etc.

As we've said before, we're still working on features and workflow development before we do a UI overhaul. This stuff doesn't magically all happen at the same time.

But is a UI overhaul on the agenda? Normally a UI doesn't change much after the first version. FCP, Photoshop, After Effects, all pretty much the same as version 1.0.

Actually, After Effects was completely different in version 6.5 to version 7 - in version 6.5, the UI had floating windows, but 7 brought the dockable interface a bit like we have today.

Yes it's on the agenda.
Sometimes it doesn't make sense to keep changing the UI every time you add or change a feature because you can spend alot of time going in circles. Implement, use, refine.

Ah, that's good to know.
True, After Effects changed a bit through the years but the general idea - where everything is - stayed the same.

Deanan,
What are you guys thinking for the final UI? Lots of windows or something more like the old Redcine, Scratch, Color, Inferno, etc? I really prefer to old Redcine UI to lots of windows.
Although the old Redcine UI really only works on one monitor and I use two monitors most of the time. Three monitors if you count my SDI out. On set though I typically only have one monitor on my laptop.
So a UI that is clean and easy to use on my laptop or in the studio would be great.

+1 for preferring the older Redcine look.
X comes out as a mish-mash of dark windows on a Dreamcolour (1920x1200) that's set to DCI-P3 colour emulation.
Currently trying find out why I can't get audio out of Build 21 clips (that play audio just fine in Redcine) :-(
