View Full Version : Leica Summicron-R 50mm vs. RPP 50mm?

I have a number of great Leica lenses -- including the amazing 100 macro, and the incredible 28mm, and 50mm primes. I also have the very nice 80-200 zoom. I use these on my still cameras and on my 5D2.

I like many, and looking at getting a RED -- possibly RED One. I know my lenses are compatible with RED (with the EOS adaptor), but how do the Leica lenses compare to the RPP ?

Thanks

Steve

Leica makes very sharp lenses, probably sharper than RRPs. But, these are still lenses and they can be less than perfect for pulling focus and handling in motion picture environment. RRPs are sharp enough and specifically designed for motion picture. Your call, really.

Use an Allstar A mount lens mount on the camera and then purchase A mount adaptors for the R mount lenses. There are a number of companies who make Lens gears, Cinevate, Actionproducts, Les Bosher in the UK, also ask Focus Optics, Duclos who can make them for you. Also consider making them a 80mm front so they fit a matte box. The iris can be de clicked easily.

You could also consider a P&S IMS mount instead of the A mount but there are warrenty issues with it. Its a good product though.

Leica R lenses are very, very good.

Sanjin vill have something to say about this Im sure, he must be asleep right now as the mention of Leica usually has him hopping about with excitement....

Yes, Leica R glass is remarkably sharp and high contrast. Van Diemen conversion to PL is worth considering.

If somebody is interested in to get my set of Leica R lenses 19, 24, 28, 35, 50, 60

here is the Leica Online Vintage Shop (http://www.leicashop.com/) in Vienna where you can order them>>>

Also I'm just making transition and start to replace Leica R set with the newest Leica M aspherical lenses.

The first is to get Leica-M Summilux 50mm f/1.4 Aspherical but Leica has backorder...I'm waiting...

Stay tuned.

Why I'm doing it?

I just want to have the best lenses at wide open and Summilux-M 50mm F/1.4 ASPH supposed

to has the best wide open lens performance of any lens ever made, still or cine.

Also I do not have right now about 180.000 Euro for set of 10 brand new Leica Mystery Primes (to be renamed and announced at NAB 2010),

but I could do a slow transition to their still photo brothers and sisters

21/1.4, 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 50/1.4, 50/0.95, 75/2, 90/2 (already have an old but excellent version).

That's probably on par with MPs (they have over 40% MTF at 50lp/mm at f/1.2), but I'd hate pulling focus at f/1.4 on the Leica unless it is modified for something like 300+ degree rotation of the focus ring. What is the breathing like on the Summilux-M 50mm?

Hi Pawel,

bw, there is no breathing on the newest Noctilux f/0.95

(here is a video example shot with my R1M (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=562068&postcount=34))

and I still didn't test it with Summilux ASPH, can't confirm that but hopefully probably not at all.

I've just started converting my Leica R to "PL". The mount is real PL, but since the flange distance is "off", I will be engineering a "variable" PL mount, so you can switch from real PL to the "fake" pl mounted lens.

I tested my Leica R against the RPP and can say that the Leica are slightly sharper in the center, but noticeable softer towards the edge:(. Still, for me they are first choice because of the famous Leica look:)

"Also I'm just making transition and start to replace Leica R set with the newest Leica M aspherical lenses."

??? I'm sure you know better but I thought it wouldn't be possible to get the Leica M's close enough to the sensor?

I'm actually wondering this too. Thought M lenses weren't compatible.
I have a Leica M 35mm Summicron ASPH.
