Kaixo (Hello),
I was saving money to buy the Panasonic HVX-200
until this year: I went to NAB2007 and I saw the superincredible "Crossing the line".
I heard that Red is developping a smaller camera.
When approximately this will happen?
How much will cost?
Red Team, Thank you for bringing hope!

NB: Im doing some shortfilms and someday, wish to make my movies. This is one of them:

Yes, Red announced a "Professional Pocket Camera" at NAB '07. Those three words are all we have. They have released nothing more about it since: no timeline, no cost, no description or specs, no further details at all. As I recall someone said they were still busy with Red One development & manufacturing for now. Some have speculated this was to provoke public discussion about what people wanted this to be, in order to guide their development process.

i think your best bet is to wait until at least ibc before asking. if red says anything in the near future, they'll probably announce it at some type of event.

The RED Pocket Professional will likely be announced at NAB 2008... but it is NOT a replacement for, nor will it have the specs of... the RED ONE.

Oh, I'm more than a little curious about this. I keep wondering if it's conceptually more like an SI-2K Mini or a digital version of the old "Film at 11!" news cameras like the Canon Scoopic 16M. Cause a hand-held 2K beastie with the right ergonomics could be really, really handy.

Heh...well, not just the price-conscious, but those of us who aren't looking forward to shooting with a heavy, bulky rig all the time. I know the Red One is modular, but with rails, battery, drive and lens the Red One looks like a pretty big rig, even at its most compact. Not big for a movie set, but pretty big for a run-and-gun doc crew.

I really liked your mini-movie! Nice style and action.
Dear Mr. Jannard!
Please, build the HD(2K) camcorder at price up to $3-5K (camera body only) with 1/3" or 1/2" image sensor and ability record REDcode raw to Compact Flash 1920x1080p60/50/30/25/24, 1280x720p120/60/50/30/25/24.
I'll glad to pay $1K deposit and wait up to NAB2008.
P.S. Dear Moderators, how about new subforum dedicated to REDmini(pocket, 2K, HD) ?
No more japanese hdv/avchd camcorders for me!
I believe in RED(mini) with visually lossless wavelet raw - Cineform RAW:biggrin:

When Jim said the Red Pocket Camera wont be a replacement nor will it have the specs of the RED ONE, could he possibly mean that Pocket RED wont be a substantial stand alone camera (with it's own lens, chip, etc) but a secondary supplementary camera for the RED ONE?
But no sense in building a lipstick camera of the RED is there?

If its a wish list why not wish for 4k...?!
Because there's already a 4K camera available and the "mini" is supposed to be mini! To me, 4K implies a relatively big, heavy duty cam, and relatively expensive.
Red could wipe out the prosumer market of Sony, Pani, and the others if they came out with a 2K raw cam the size of the HVX (or smaller) for something in the sub $7K range. However, one big (non-tech) problem might be manufacturing such a cam. It might be hard to build this sort of cam here in the OC. ??? I'm sure JL has this all under control though. :)
Regards .............. and "go mini"

Personally I think the mini-RED will be introduced to dominate the lower format echelons topping out at max 1080P. 'Big Momma' will take care of the 2 - 4k playing field whilst 'Bubba' becomes to playground bully!.......just a thought.
Cheers,
Mark.

Um, do we even know if it's a motion image camera at all? What if it's a DSLR, or something else entirely?
I, for one, would love to see a 1080p Redcode RAW 6lbs camera with a fixed 18-85mm f2.8 lens recording to CF card. $5K total, and it would kill JVC, Panny and Sony's hi-end consumer sales. Who would buy an HDV camera then?
Mark Thorpe
09-08-2007, 03:57 PM
hmmmmm, maybe I'm assuming, like many others, that this will be a motion cam. I guess NAB will reveal all.......man thats a long wait. But it would certainly kick ass if that were the scenario.....
HDV is the spawn of satan......working with my first and last cam at the moment (Sony Z1). Not saying it can't produce a nice image but it just can't stand up in post.....artifacts and debris everywhere....so frustrating.

Jaime is right... We don't know anything right now. All we know is that it's a "professional pocket camera". Whatever that means.
There have already been several threads here discussing everyones wishes and guesses regarding this camera. Personally, I'm hoping for something that can be held easily with one hand, Fit in a coat pocket, record to common flash media and shoot 2K resolution (or better) with a 2/3" sensor. Beyond that I'm anxious to see what NAB '08 reveals.

You have a problem with REDCODE?
You have a problem with REDCODE?
I don't have problem with CineformHD.
I love to have ONE codec for acquisition and editing.
After testing CineformRAW 2K samples from SI2K i know this better solution ever.

1. You can edit REDCODE onlice in FCP or
2. You can transcode REDCODE to Cineform
3. I see Acpect HD, Prospect HD/2K but no 4K

PC users have to be patient little bit now. I hope that online REDCODE editing will be possible on this platform too.

You need understand basic question of time:
acquisition and editing codec must be native wavelet RAW with applied look from camera. Check 2K samples from SI2K camera
http://www.siliconimaging.com/DigitalCinema/gallery_footage.html
Try to play these 2K raw and REDcode 2K raw and compare them.

I can't compare when footage is not shot in same conditions. Sorry.

You can compare just CPU usage both codec with 2K samples.
Check also smart combination CineformRAW with Iridas SpeedGrade.

REDCODE today is Mac only and Cineform is PC only. How can I compare CPU usage? Am I missing something?

Laco,
You're not missing anything. Cineform is in rough beta form on the Mac and not technically available.
vsv is just an instigator and I'm proposing we all just ignore him from here on out. I'm not sure if what we're reading isn't just an act... Act or not, there's little rationality in his posts. He's spouting off about Cineform being 4K ready, yet he doesn't have all the tech details in place.
REDCODE today is Mac only and Cineform is PC only. How can I compare CPU usage? Am I missing something?
But Cinefrom exist for MAC and PC ;)
Because Cineform codec for long time, every platform and Future of digital cinema.

Thanks for the update, Jim! I was kinda guessing that. Care to drop any hints beforehand as to what lens mounts it'll work with? Please?
I'm just looking for an excuse to start saving money to buy a Red PL-mount zoom.
Due to lack of info provided on the Pocket Camera, I gave up and went with a HV20 + SGpro 35mm adapter + Zacuto shoulder mount + my own external LCD combo (total under $4000), plus about $1500 worth of Nikon lenses (used primes, plus a 80-200 2.8 AF-D).
I hope your camera will deliver significantly better image quality than my combo for a similar price. But for every month that goes by without info on the Red Pocket Pro camera, I put more money into my current rig. Okay, a lot of this is designed to be transferable to a Red camera in the future, but if, for instance, you state that the Red Motor will be compatible with the Pocket Pro cam in the future, then I can look into buying one now for my HV20 rig and then migrating to your Pocket Pro later.
I really don't think it'll undercut sales of the Red One if your release info on the Pocket Pro camera before NAB. The Red One is awesome, just overkill for my needs.

I will be interested to see if there will be any real competition for the new Sony XDCAM EX. I suspect the Red Pocket Camera will be it, but I can't really see how.

The ex is just another low bit-rate long GOP cam ............................. :angry03:
The Red Pocket and Ex shouldn't be compared as competitors.
