Hi all,
Our earliest RED camera #329 has just been upgraded to MX. Just wondering if there's a consensus on Oz rentals for upgraded cameras? I was leaning towards not increasing our rates from Mysterium to MX - but wanted to get opinions from others.
Much appreciated,

You just paid $5700 for the upgrade...an increase in rent is appropriate.

The MX sensor upgrade makes your camera a whole new camera, that outperforms a regular Red. The MX is in short supply, but high demand. I would be charging a premium for an MX red right now.

I agree the MX sensor makes a big difference to shooting outcomes as in fast ASA less noise etc therefore possibly saving $$$ on lighting and set up time etc all which comes at your expense of the upgrade. So I would think you should put your prices up.
Cheers, Tim.

Good points - thanks guys.
Any thoughts on what an appropriate percentage increase would be?

I would think it should be at least 20%.
Having said that, do you think clients will care about MX shooting outside during the day? Does the additional DR show itself distinctly in the bright?

I'd imagine the added highlight protection would help balance bright exteriors with areas in shadow (maybe not so much in camera on the day but later in post).
Also for outdoor shoots you could sell DPs on the reduced (or eliminated?) IR pollution and the black sun fix.

As someone who will be renting that camera I would hope the price stays the same! But in all fairness a price increase would seem appropriate for a completely new camera. I just hope the post houses here get their shit together.
Any chance I can come have a play this week?
Cheers,
Jonas

bingo - we stepped up from 600 to 780!
On the other hand you have one more argument not going every low price on the market with a new camera

It's still sitting in LA. I'm picking it up in person next week and shooting a doco over there. When I'm back with it you'll have to come over for a test mate :)
And on the post front - don't forget, graetzmedia always has their shit together ;)

If you need a post house, we have no problems w/ M-X footage.
