JimThanks my fiancé... :) It seems our 1st marriage is closer. October 10th, right? I hope to have it for my birthday seven days away from there. Actually, this will be my personal camera, no rentals at all! At least, since my official 2nd one. 31 days later, I hope.

Should we expect a call about our orders or are we suppose to call Red to finalize order details?

Rick Darge
09-06-2007, 01:12 PM
I probably won't get an answer.. but since you're rolling out 51-100 over the course of three days.. I wonder what RED will do for later orders where they're rolling out 400 new cams in one chunk.. will the release of 400 cameras in November be stretched out by a few days or weeks?

I'm number 75. So I can pick it up as early as Sept. 22 or as late as Sept. 25th, right. I'm LA local and will be right down to the wire on a project shooting the first week in October which I intend to shoot on RED.
thanks.

We are doing the best we can... we have some supplier issues that are causing us grief but we are working around the issues. Seems like we get a new surprise everyday.

The more material and outside process suppliers that one has just raises the possibility that one or more of them will manage to screw up even the best laid plans. Its just the nature of a manufacturing endeavor and no surprise at all. I am certain that RED and everyone involved is doing their best.

Thanks Jim for the update.

Dumb question perhaps...

How does the Red get to us? Or do we go to it? (I'm UK based)

If it's shipped to us, any chance of getting it shipped within a Peli Case (like the few I saw in the "unwrap" photos with laser cut padding, that were blow-torch branded)??

Not that I don't trust carriers - it's that I just don't trust them. I've lost $10K's worth of kit in transit mainly through damage. If the carrier wrecks my Red, the last thing I need is to go to the end of the order line after the insurance company pays up.

And even if I hop on a plane, with the security issues these days, it'll have to go in the hold (where it's carefully stowed by monkeys). Do we need to worry about X-Ray machines causing damage?

Curiously the Red camera resembles a "Hollywood" suitcase bomb... Air travel is just going to be fun.

No worries. RED is so tough they just slap a FEDEX label on one side of the body and sticker on the other side that says "Do Your Worst".

I flew down last week, when the original ship date was, but then mine wasn't ready. I still had an awesome time though. It was the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket :-)

I can't afford to fly down or even drive down again so soon :-)

No, I wasn't confused. I had a fantastic time seeing Jim again and the crew. I'm an engineer by degree, so I know the process, I am more than happy to let Jim have all the time he needs to ship my unit, as long as I'm still in my place in line! Red Day was a dream come true, I was honored to be there.

I just had a look and touch of camera 51 tonight. Man, thats a nice looking Rig.
I am still salivating. It was standing beside the SI 2K and it just oozed quality.
December can't come fast enough.

That is correct, cameras 50 and 51 to the same company, they flew down to pick up the cameras on Friday. First REDs in Toronto as far as I know.

Hey Shawn they sent me #27 last week to give a test run with. Its a great camera and you would not believe how durable it is. I have beat the crap out of it and it is only a little louder when running then it first was.

We also got RED #27 for a day, over here in Mexico, for extensive, various tests.

The paint job is superb, it really takes its toll on you when you try to scratch the body. 10 minutes and a gallon of sweat later, and I only managed to inflict five tiny scratches, about 15 inches long each.

Same with the sensor, you really have to scrub sand on it to see results. Shooting directly into the sun won't show anything wrong with the picture, though.

We shipped it back today for other tests, after which I am being told it will be delivered to its legitimate owner.

We are dismayed, today we got back RED #27 in the mail, returned as "undeliverable".

The bad news: I opened up the metal case and I realized I forgot to put in any foam or bubble wrap when I shipped the camera.

The good news: the camera took the beating like a champ, and the general consensus here (after long deliberations) is that it still resembles a RED.

HOWEVER, with all the good news, we are currently experiencing difficulties when we are trying to power up the camera. We haven't seen anything wrong with the insides, but are working on it. In the meantime, we are also looking into finding the right address to ship this marvel.

Have you tried connecting mains power to the sensor directly? (provides some stunning images)
Make sure to wear earplugs.

It does work, but only using 220 V current.

We tried that and while it produced some truly spectacular, eye-popping sparks it achieved nothing in the end. We did need to solder the sensor back in place, but it's fine.

Any other suggestions? We need to fix this soon.

Dear Shawn,

We are happy we finally know who is the proud owner of Red #27! Please don't worry, everything is in order.

Can you confirm that this is indeed the item? We tried to ship it today but we were refused by the Mexico National Postal Office, we will try a different avenue. We'll make sure it gets to you safely.

All the best Shawn.

I read someplace that his ex-girlfriends are complaining he's exactly the same down there, which complicates matters extensively. Don't know if it's true, though.
